The world woke to the jarring sight of plumes of smoke rising over Tehran’s Pasteur district in the bright morning sun on Saturday. Contrary to traditional military doctrine, which almost universally favours the “cloak of darkness" to mask movements and baffle air defences, the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury (known in Israel as Operation Roaring Lion) in broad daylight. This tactical departure was not a matter of convenience but a calculated psychological and strategic gambit designed to achieve objectives far beyond simple physical destruction.
The most immediate reason for the daytime assault was the exploitation of “expectation bias". Historically, almost every major Western air campaign against the Iranian regime—including the 12-day air war in June 2025—began under the cover of night, typically between 2 am and 4 am. By launching strikes at approximately 8.10 am local time, the US-Israeli coalition caught the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) at their moment of peak vulnerability. Security sources indicated that Tehran’s air defence units, having remained on high alert throughout the night, were in the process of shifting shifts or lowering their readiness state as day broke, assuming the “danger window" had passed.
Unlike previous “surgical" or covert strikes, the 2026 operation carried an explicit goal of regime change. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released coordinated statements urging the Iranian people to “take over your government". A daylight operation allowed for an additional layer of target verification, ensuring that strikes hit the “homes of ministers and military heads" with surgical accuracy while attempting to manage the collateral damage that might otherwise galvanise the population against the attackers rather than the regime.
Beyond the immediate theatre of war, the daylight strikes served as a demonstration of “total air supremacy". By operating in the morning, the US and Israel effectively signalled to global observers—and other regional adversaries—that Iranian air defences were so thoroughly compromised or outmatched that the coalition felt no need for the traditional protection of night. It was a display of “Aatmavishwaas" (self-confidence) on a geopolitical scale, suggesting that the “massive naval armada" led by the USS Gerald R Ford and USS Abraham Lincoln could operate with impunity at any hour.
As the “initial phase" of the attack is projected to last at least four days, observers say the shift to daylight operations marks a new era in modern warfare where psychological dominance and real-time visual narratives are considered just as vital as the kinetic destruction of the targets themselves.
