Ever Spotted Chalk Marks On Your Airport Luggage? Here’s What Customs Officers Don’t Tell You
Many travellers are unaware that their bags are screened even before they reach the baggage belt. At Indian airports, this process works a little differently from most international ones. Once luggage is unloaded from the aircraft, it passes through an X-ray machine where customs officers check for anything suspicious. If something catches their attention, they make small chalk markings, such as an X, A, or C, on the bags.
These simple marks actually carry important messages for customs staff. This helps them decide which bags need to be opened and inspected again in the passenger's presence. Most travellers never notice or understand these small chalk symbols, yet they play a crucial role in airport security and customs checks.
A similar post about these chalk marks was shared on X (formerly Twitter) and has since gone viral. The post, which shows a passenger's bag marked with chalk, was shared with the caption, “Chalk markings are signals to customs officers. There are two kinds: C and A. A-marked bags are released last on the carousel. Any holder of an A-marked bag is escorted to customs along with baggage handlers. Even officers stay quiet, these guys show off and irritate passengers. Use wet tissues or a wet cloth to wipe it off. Carry a small water bottle from the flight, it will be very useful."

Reasons For Chalk Markings
If your bag passes through the X-ray machine and something inside looks unusual, airport staff may decide to mark it. Instead of stopping the bag right away, they often mark it with a chalk symbol so another team can check it later. Bags marked with an ‘X' usually need extra screening by customs officers. Those with an ‘A' are held back and released last on the baggage belt, and passengers with such bags are generally taken to customs for checking. ‘C' mark means the bag must be opened and inspected by hand.
What To Do If Your Bag Is Marked
If you or someone you know finds a chalk mark on their luggage, there's no need to panic as long as everything inside is legal. These marks are only meant to help customs officers for a quick check. Trying to remove it is not a good idea, as it may look like an attempt to hide something. The best thing to do is to stay calm and cooperate with the customs officials. Simply answer their questions honestly and let them inspect your bag. Once the checking is done, you'll be free to leave without any hassle.

Practices In Different Countries
This system of marking bags is followed in a few countries, including India, but it is not used everywhere. Many international airports follow their own ways to handle such luggage. Instead of chalk marks, some countries prefer to take selected passengers to a separate customs zone for manual checking. Others may use different types of indicators, like writing on the baggage tag with a permanent marker. Each country follows its own procedure, but the goal remains the same: to ensure that all items entering the country are safe and comply with customs regulations.
