Although intimate health is often overlooked, men can maintain comfort, confidence, and overall wellness during winter by adopting a few simple, science-backed habits shared by Dr Chirag Bhandari, Men's Health & Andrology Expert and Founder, IASH (Institute of Andrology and Sexual Health):

Hygiene and Skin Care: Protecting Against Dryness and Irritation

Winter air, along with indoor heating, often causes dryness including in the genital area. Doctors recommend using a mild, pH-balanced intimate wash instead of regular soap, which can strip natural moisture and worsen irritation. Applying a gentle moisturizer after bathing helps reduce itching and prevents small cuts or razor bumps in men who shave or groom.

Experts also advise wearing loose, breathable cotton underwear during colder months. Synthetic fabrics trap heat and sweat, creating an environment where bacteria and fungi thrive. Proper washing, thorough drying, and trimming pubic hair for easier hygiene all help reduce the risk of rashes and infections that are more common in winter.

Circulation and Daily Lifestyle: Supporting Blood Flow and Performance

In winter, blood vessels naturally constrict to conserve body heat. This reduces circulation to the extremities including the genitals and may temporarily affect comfort or erection quality, sometimes referred to as “winter penis." A study published in Urology found that low outdoor temperatures can worsen erectile dysfunction in men with risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

Increasing daily physical activity is one of the best ways to improve circulation. Cardio exercises such as brisk walking, cycling, or light jogging enhance blood flow and support sexual performance. Doctors also emphasize the importance of Kegel exercises, which strengthen pelvic-floor muscles responsible for erections and ejaculation. Just five to ten minutes of daily practice can produce noticeable improvements.

Nutrition, Hydration and Hormones: Building Fertility and Stamina

A winter diet plays a major role in supporting fertility, stamina, and hormone balance. Antioxidant-rich foods such as oranges, amla, berries, spinach, and tomatoes help combat oxidative stress that can damage sperm. Nuts, seeds, dals, fish, and leafy greens provide essential nutrients like zinc, folate, and L-arginine, all linked to healthier testosterone levels and improved sperm production. A review in Human Reproduction Update found that men who consumed diets high in vegetables, legumes, and fish had a significantly lower risk of infertility.

Hydration is equally important. Cold weather often reduces fluid intake, which can thicken seminal fluid and reduce sperm motility. Staying hydrated helps maintain normal seminal consistency, natural lubrication, and overall semen quality.

Winter can also affect mood and hormones. Shorter daylight hours can raise melatonin levels, which may suppress testosterone and libido. Regular sunlight exposure, stress management through yoga or meditation, and 7–9 hours of sleep can help stabilize hormones. If needed, vitamin D supplements taken under medical supervision may support energy and mood.
