Essential Health Screenings Every Man Should Start After 30

Regular health screening is one of the most effective ways for men to prevent serious illnesses and detect potential issues early. As men cross the age of 30, lifestyle factors, genetics, and ageing begin to influence their overall health in more significant ways. Routine check-ups, timely tests, and awareness of risk factors can lead to early intervention and better long-term outcomes. Below, Dr Anshul Bansal, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospital Goa, outlines the essential screenings every man should consider.

Blood Pressure: Annual screening is recommended for adults with risk factors and for adults above 40 years of age, even if they have no known risk factors. Adults aged 18–39 years without risk factors should be screened every 3–5 years.

Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference: BMI calculation and abdominal (waist) circumference measurement should be routinely performed. A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is considered normal. Those with a BMI of 25–30 kg/m² are overweight, and those with a BMI above 30 kg/m² are classified as obese. A waist circumference greater than 40 inches is associated with a higher risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease in men.

Screening for Type 2 Diabetes and Dyslipidemia: All men above 40 years should be screened for type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia (high cholesterol and triglycerides). Overweight or obese individuals should begin screening earlier.

Diabetes screening includes fasting blood sugar, 2-hour postprandial blood sugar, and HbA1c levels. A fasting lipid profile is preferred for assessing dyslipidemia.

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Screening: Men at high risk of contracting STIs such as those having unprotected sex, multiple partners, men who have sex with men, intravenous drug users, or those with regular exposure to blood (e.g., healthcare workers) should be screened for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, and syphilis.

Bone Mineral Density: Bone mineral density testing is recommended for all men aged 70 years or older, and for men aged 50–69 years who have risk factors such as frailty or low BMI.

Colorectal Cancer: Men above 50 years should undergo colonoscopy screening every 10 years.

Lung Cancer: Annual low-dose CT scan screening is recommended for men aged 50–55 years and above who have a 30-pack-year smoking history (e.g., 1 pack/day for 30 years or 2 packs/day for 15 years), and who either currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.

Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer screening may be offered to men aged 55–69 years. The decision to screen should be made on a case-by-case basis after considering individual risk factors and personal preferences.
