You Can Now 'Rent' A Mango Tree In India And Get Up To 90 Kg Of Mangoes Delivered Home, Thanks To This Viral Startup
For most Indians, summer isn’t just a season; it’s mango season! The arrival of juicy Alphonsos, fragrant Banganapallis and dozens of other varieties signals the most delicious time of the year. But what if you could enjoy mangoes not just as a buyer, but as the owner of a tree, that too without ever setting foot in an orchard?
A startup from Kochi is making that unusual idea possible. Through a platform called Rent A Tree, mango lovers can now lease a tree for an entire season and receive its full harvest directly at home.
The process is surprisingly straightforward. Customers simply log onto the platform, browse through mango trees listed in orchards and select one to lease.
The rental starts at around ₹10,300 per season. In return, customers receive the entire yield of that tree, which can go up to 90 kilograms of mangoes over the season.
The orchards are located across India’s mango-growing regions such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Farmers handle everything from nurturing the tree to harvesting the fruit. When the mangoes ripen naturally on the tree, they are carefully packed and delivered to the customer’s doorstep.
In essence, you get the joy of having “your own tree", without owning land or farming it.
And users seem to enjoy the idea. One person wrote, “Never in my life did I think “I own a mango tree in Kerala" would be a flex from someone sitting in a Mumbai apartment." Another pointed out how this model could work well in India. “This is a brilliant example of how simple ideas can reconnect people with nature and agriculture. Urban consumers get access to fresh, seasonal produce while farmers or landowners get a steady income without worrying about market price fluctuations. Models like this could also help preserve local orchards and encourage sustainable farming. If scaled well, initiatives like Rent A Tree could reshape how we think about food ownership and farm-to-home supply chains."

The idea taps into a growing curiosity among urban consumers: people want to know where their food comes from.
In recent years, farm-to-table movements have gained momentum in India, with more people looking for produce that is traceable, fresh and naturally grown.
Renting a mango tree takes this idea one step further. Instead of buying fruit from an anonymous pile at a market, customers know exactly which orchard (and sometimes which tree) their mangoes come from.
