Amid campaigning for state elections, Abhishek Banerjee stirred a political controversy on Monday after making strong remarks while criticising the Centre’s response to Pakistan’s recent threat to Kolkata.
Speaking at a rally in Siliguri, the Trinamool Congress general secretary said that once Mamata Banerjee and the INDIA alliance come to power at the Centre, “we will enter their homes and kill them."
He referred to comments made by Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who had warned that Kolkata could be targeted in case of future hostilities between India and Pakistan.
Abhishek Banerjee criticised PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for remaining silent on the issue.
He said, “Two days back Pakistan minister Khwaja Asif threatened to attack Kolkata. PM Modi is silent, HM Amit Shah is silent and so is Defence Minister."
He added that he had written Asif’s name on a piece of paper and said, “The day Mamata Banerjee and INDIA bloc-led government comes to power at the Centre, we will go to his house and teach him a lesson. Ghar me ghus ke marenge."
Banerjee also accused the Prime Minister of focusing on election campaigning in Cooch Behar while ignoring the threat. He alleged that Modi uses the Army and central agencies against political opponents instead of external enemies, and questioned the leadership by asking, “Is this your 56-inch chest?"

In another poll campaign, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said Pakistan’s Defence Minister had openly threatened Kolkata but the Prime Minister had said nothing. She questioned whether the lives of people in West Bengal mattered to the Centre and asked if the state was only relevant during elections.

Khawaja Asif had earlier warned India of a strong response to any “misadventure". Speaking in Sialkot, he said Pakistan could target Kolkata if provoked.
He also alleged that India might attempt a “false flag" operation, possibly involving local operatives or Pakistanis in Indian custody, but did not provide any evidence.
On Thursday, Asif had said Pakistan’s response to any attack would be “swift, calibrated, and decisive."
The exchange comes after India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warned that any misadventure by Pakistan would lead to an “unprecedented and decisive" response.
Tensions between the two countries trace back to the Pahalgam attack on April 22 last year, which led to Operation Sindoor, a four-day conflict.
