What Keeps Sameera Reddy’s Father Strong At 93? His Answer Highlights The Missing Piece In Longevity Conversations
Got Question about the News?
Bollywood actress Sameera Reddy’s father, Chinta Poli Reddy, turned 93 on August 12. To mark the occasion, the actor shared a video on Instagram in which she asked him a simple question: What makes him strong at 93? “My mind, my family—my wife and my three daughters," he answered.
His words draw attention to an aspect of longevity that is often overlooked. Conversations about living longer usually revolve around nutritious food, regular exercise, adequate sleep and preventive healthcare.
While all these habits matter, a long life is not measured only by the number of years lived. The quality, meaning and emotional richness of those years are equally important.
The Missing Piece In Longevity
Chinta Poli Reddy did not credit a particular diet or fitness routine. Instead, he spoke about his mind and the people closest to him. His answer suggests that inner strength, companionship and a sense of belonging have played an important role in helping him feel strong at 93.
Family can offer more than practical support as people grow older. Everyday conversations, shared meals and simply having someone who listens can provide reassurance and make life feel purposeful. These relationships may also encourage older adults to remain involved in family decisions, celebrations and routines rather than feeling disconnected.
Research supports the importance of these bonds. The World Health Organization says strong social connections are associated with better health and a longer life. Meaningful social activities may also improve mental health, life satisfaction and overall quality of life among older adults.
A Strong Mind Matters Too
The first thing Reddy mentioned was his mind. Mental strength can mean different things to different people—staying curious, adapting to change, maintaining a positive outlook or continuing to engage with the world.
Ageing inevitably brings changes, but feeling valued and mentally involved can make those transitions easier to navigate. Reading, learning something new, pursuing hobbies and participating in meaningful conversations can all help older adults remain engaged.
This does not mean optimism alone guarantees a longer life. Genetics, healthcare, socioeconomic conditions, physical activity and several other factors influence ageing. However, emotional well-being can shape how fulfilling those additional years feel.
Longevity Is Also About Belonging
Not everyone has a spouse, children or a large family. Social connection can also come from friendships, neighbours, community groups, colleagues, volunteering or shared interests. What matters is having relationships in which a person feels seen, supported and included.
This becomes particularly important with age, when retirement, reduced mobility or the loss of loved ones can shrink a person’s social circle. The WHO notes that loneliness and social isolation can affect physical and mental health, quality of life and longevity.
Adding Life To The Years
Healthy eating, movement, sleep and regular medical care remain essential parts of ageing well. But Reddy’s answer offers a gentle reminder: good health is not only about maintaining the body. It is also about nurturing the mind and holding close the relationships that give life meaning.
Perhaps the better longevity question is not simply, “How can we live longer?" It is also, “What makes those years worth living?"
For Chinta Poli Reddy, the answer is clear—his mind and his family.
Strong social connections are linked to better health and a longer life, with meaningful social activities potentially improving mental health, life satisfaction, and overall quality of life for older adults. Conversely, social disconnection is associated with higher risks of heart disease, stroke, anxiety, depression, and dementia, and loneliness can increase the risk of premature death.
Mental well-being plays a crucial role in aging, with factors like feeling valued, mentally involved, and having inner strength, companionship, and a sense of belonging contributing to longevity and overall strength in older age. Maintaining a strong mind can involve staying curious, adapting to change, having a positive outlook, and engaging with the world. Emotional well-being is also key to brain health.
Family support, including companionship and a sense of belonging, can contribute to a longer, happier life by providing reassurance, purpose, and encouraging involvement in daily routines and decisions. Research indicates that social connection is crucial for health, with social disconnection linked to higher risks of heart disease, stroke, anxiety, depression, dementia, and premature death.
