Users can now order food, groceries from Swiggy using ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini
Swiggy, on Tuesday, announced that users of its food delivery service and Instamart can now place orders using artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini.
Users can now order food and groceries, and even book restaurants on Swiggy's Dineout service using these tools, according to the company's press release.
This has been implemented using the model context protocol (MCP), an open-source standard that allows AI models to interact with external services like shopping and payment apps, data sources, software, etc.
“By bringing MCP to quick commerce, food delivery, and dining out, we're removing friction from daily decisions and enabling a level of ease, personalisation, and joy that makes on-demand convenience feel effortless,” said Madhusudhan Rao, chief technology officer, Swiggy, in a statement.
Now, users can skip the Swiggy app and order directly from the AI chatbots with prompts like “order 5 kg atta on Instamart” or “order a highly rated biryani I would love”, and more. The AI agent then takes on the job to search for the items, apply coupons, place the order, and move to check out. To be able to do this, users need to connect their AI chat agent with Swiggy by providing the MCP URL.
This comes at a time when companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and Google Gemini are increasingly focusing on integrating AI-led commerce with external platforms.
AI commerce
In November 2025, ET reported that Amazon India and Flipkart were optimising their product listings for some categories to ensure better visibility on ChatGPT, etc.
This followed the National Payments Corporation of India's (NPCI's) integration with ChatGPT in October, in partnership with Razorpay and Tata group-owned BigBasket. In the pilot phase, users can shop directly from BigBasket via ChatGPT and pay through UPI without leaving the AI platform.
Unlike conventional search engines like Google, tools like ChatGPT respond to prompts and generate curated answers. Hence, brands and ecommerce platforms need to optimise their products and listings as per most used prompts and keywords. This is called generative engine optimisation (GEO).
In August 2025, ET reported that direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands were focussing on GEO as consumers had turned to AI tools to search for products.
