Market Updates: Sensex Climbs Over 350 Points, Nifty Tops 24,150; IT Stocks Extend Rally

Stock Market Today, July 16: The domestic equity markets traded higher in late morning deals on Thursday, supported by strong buying in information technology stocks, while broader markets also remained positive despite mixed global cues and elevated crude oil prices.

At around 11:00 am, the BSE Sensex was up 364.99 points, or 0.47%, at 77,550.42, while the Nifty 50 gained 86 points, or 0.36%, to 24,164.50.

Market volatility eased further, with India VIX falling 3.03% to 12.87, indicating improved investor sentiment.

The Nifty IT index remained the best-performing sector, rising 1.62%, as investors accumulated technology stocks ahead of the ongoing Q1 earnings season. Among Sensex constituents, HCLTech surged 2.75%, followed by Tech Mahindra (+1.97%), Infosys (+1.41%), and TCS (+1.10%).

Buying was also visible in automobiles and consumption-linked stocks, with the Nifty Auto index rising 0.77%, Consumer Durables gaining 1.13%, Media advancing 1.29%, and Chemicals climbing 1.31%.

On the other hand, financial stocks remained under pressure. The Nifty Financial Services index slipped 0.12%, while the Financial Services Ex-Bank index declined 0.65%. Private Bank index was largely flat.

The broader market outperformed frontline indices in several pockets. The Nifty Next 50 gained 0.48%, while the Nifty Midcap Select advanced 0.54%. The Nifty Midcap 100, Smallcap 100, and Nifty 500 also traded in positive territory, reflecting broad-based buying interest.

Asian markets remained under pressure as investors awaited quarterly earnings from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) after weakness in global semiconductor stocks.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices stayed elevated after rising for a fourth straight session amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, keeping concerns alive over potential supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.

V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, believes the market is likely to remain earnings-driven. “With no major changes in crude prices and global markets holding steady, our market is likely to trade in a narrow band with a positive bias. With many companies reporting their Q1 results in the coming days, the market is likely to respond to the results," he said.

Highlighting sectors to watch, Vijayakumar said, “Financials — both banks and NBFCs — are likely to report a good set of numbers aided by robust credit growth now running at 18%."

On automobiles, he added it is a sector to watch closely since the growth numbers for Q1 would be impressive and the sector continues to exhibit momentum, aided by GST cuts and easy availability of finance.

He also expects digital businesses to remain in focus, saying, “Platform companies which have turned profitable and continue to grow impressively will be rewarded by the market."

IT stocks are currently leading the market rally on Thursday, July 16, 2026. The Nifty IT index rose 1.62%, with HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and TCS showing gains.

Global tensions, particularly between the United States and Iran, are affecting crude oil prices by raising concerns over potential supply disruptions.
