US Anchor’s Reaction To ‘Dhoom Machale’ Song At Zohran Mamdani’s Victory Speech: ‘Let’s Turn That Up’
One thing that was even more iconic than democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani becoming the first Indian-American Muslim mayor of New York City was the victory song— “Dhoom Machale", the title track of the Bollywood film Dhoom. The son of Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani and Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, the 34-year-old politician was seen waving at his supporters before walking over to his wife, Rama Duwaji, for a hug as the song continued playing in the background.
The moment has gone viral on the Internet, and not just desis, but Americans are loving it too. A video of a Spectrum News anchor has garnered the attention of people online, where he was seen reacting to “Dhoom Machale" as it played during the election night coverage. He called it “an iconic Bollywood song," and asked the studio, “Can we listen to that? Can we turn that up a little bit?"

Zohran Mamdani Quotes Jawaharlal Nehru In His First Speech
Zohran Mamdani, who currently represents Queens in the New York State Assembly, secured a decisive victory against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, winning over 50 per cent of the vote. With his victory, he became the first Muslim, the first South Asian, and the youngest person in over a century to lead the United States' largest city.

In his victory speech, he quoted India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and said, “Standing before you, I'm reminded of Jawaharlal Nehru's words: ‘A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.' Tonight, New York has done just that."
He also thanked the new generation of New York for voting him to power. “We'll fight for you because we are you. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty," he said. He will be sworn in as mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026.
