Trump finally gets a Nobel: Venezuela's Machado 'presents' peace prize medal to US President
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said Thursday she "presented" her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump, who has openly coveted the award that the Nobel committee says cannot be transferred. "I presented the president of the United States the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize," Machado told reporters outside the US Capitol following her White House meeting with Trump.
Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado said on Thursday (local US time) that she had “presented” her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House, even as the Nobel committee has reiterated that the award itself cannot be passed on to another individual.
“I presented the president of the United States the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize,” Machado told reporters outside the US Capitol after her meeting with Trump.

A White House official later confirmed that Trump intends to keep the medal, Reuters reported.Machado herself did not specify what became of it immediately after the meeting. Trump has previously voiced strong frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize himself.
Does this mean Trump finally gets a Nobel?
Machado framed the gesture as symbolic, drawing on historical parallels from the era of independence movements in the Americas. She referenced the Marquis de Lafayette, the French nobleman who aided the United States during its war of independence from Britain, and later presented a medal bearing the likeness of George Washington to Simon Bolivar.“Two hundred years in history, the people of Bolivar are giving back to the heir of Washington a medal — in this case, the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize as a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom,” she said.
Trump publicly acknowledged the gesture later on Thursday. In a post on social media, he wrote: “Maria presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you Maria!” according to Reuters.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, however, has underscored that the honour itself is non-transferable. In an earlier statement posted on X, the committee said the Nobel Peace Prize “cannot be revoked, shared or transferred to others” and stressed that the recipient's name “stands for all time,” even if the physical medal changes hands.
Trump, who has often said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, was dismissive of Machado when she received the award last month. His comments came as he continued to advocate the use of force in other contexts, including on Thursday when he warned of stronger action against protesters in the US state of Minnesota.
Venezuela, Trump and shifting alliances
Earlier this month, Trump ordered a military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the removal of President Nicolas Maduro. The leftist leader has long been described by Washington and several other governments as illegitimate, following elections that were widely criticised for alleged irregularities.Despite backing opposition claims of victory in the last vote, Trump later said Machado lacked the “respect” needed to lead the country. US officials had previously recognised Machado's political movement as the rightful winner of the election.
Machado nonetheless offered a favourable account of her private discussion with Trump. “We are counting on President Trump for freedom in Venezuela,” she said.
She added, “President Trump knows the situation in Venezuela; he cares about how the people of Venezuela are suffering.”
Machado said she told Trump that Venezuelans “want to live with freedom, with dignity, with justice, we want our children back home, and for that to happen, there has to be democracy in Venezuela.”
Trump has previously indicated he would work not with Machado but with Delcy Rodriguez — Maduro's vice president who later assumed the role of interim president — warning that she could face force if she failed to meet key US demands, including measures favouring American oil companies.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
