Supreme Court To Hear NEET PG 2025 Transparency Plea Today; Counselling Schedule Soon

The Supreme Court will today, September 23, take up a petition demanding greater transparency in the conduct of the NEET PG 2025 examination. The matter, listed first on the board, has drawn significant attention after aspirants flagged discrepancies in their results, alleging score variations of 50 to 150 marks.

The petitioners contend that the current disclosure by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) is insufficient to ensure fairness in one of India's most competitive postgraduate medical entrance tests. Earlier, the Court had directed NBEMS to release the raw scores of all candidates, publish the official answer key, and explain the normalisation process used in result calculation. However, the Board has so far only disclosed the question IDs and corresponding answers. This limited release has been challenged as falling short of judicial directions and preventing independent verification of the evaluation process.

A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan, which heard the matter briefly on September 19, directed that it be taken up for detailed arguments today. The case has already faced adjournments, including on September 12, leading to delays in the postgraduate counselling process. The bench had earlier also raised questions about the bona fides of some petitioners before agreeing to hear the matter further.

The uncertainty has stalled the All India Quota (AIQ) counselling schedule, with the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) holding back its announcement pending clarity from the Court. Once the order is delivered, MCC is expected to release the timetable on its official website, mcc.nic.in.

In the meantime, state-level counselling has commenced in Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, proceeding independently of the national process, offering candidates an interim path to admission while awaiting the Supreme Court's ruling.
