Software Engineer Ignores Red Flags, Joins Company And Gets Laid Off In A Year: ‘My Wife Is Pregnant, I’m Trying To Hold It Together’
An Indian software engineer has opened up about a tough phase in his life after losing his job within a year of joining a new company. He said that the decision to take up the role, despite early doubts, proved to be a major mistake.
The engineer, who has around 10 years of experience, shared that he moved to a new city for the job while his pregnant wife stayed back in their hometown. What he hoped would be a good career move soon became a stressful experience.
In his post, he admitted that he overlooked several red flags before accepting the offer. “I ignored the red flags like an idiot," he wrote. He had come across negative reviews about the company’s work culture but still went ahead, thinking the opportunity would help him grow. Soon after joining, he realised things were not as expected. The work environment was difficult, with long hours and high pressure.
“The culture was toxic from day one. Constant pressure, unrealistic expectations, and a work environment that drained me completely," he said.
The situation became harder as he was living away from his family. His wife was pregnant, and he was worried about not being there for her. “I was sitting alone in a new city, stressed about my pregnant wife back home, trying to prove myself in a new domain, all at the same time," he shared.
He also mentioned that he was working in a new area, which added to the pressure. Despite his experience in full-stack development, he felt overwhelmed trying to adjust.
Things took a turn when he was laid off during his probation period. The company said it was due to performance issues. “Ten years of experience and I’m sitting here feeling like a complete failure," he wrote. “My wife is pregnant. I have no income. And I’m trying to hold it together." He also asked others for help in finding a new job.
Many users responded to his post with support and suggestions. Some advised him to stay calm and focus on the next steps.
“Don’t panic, what has happened is done. Message your old manager if you left on good terms, they might be able to take you back," a user wrote.
Another suggested he return home for some time. “First of all…do not panic bro. Try the brain-dumping technique first. Try some breathing exercises. Once you are stable… then make a plan and follow it. Otherwise… put everything aside. Go to your hometown with your wife and stay beside her during the pregnancy."
Others offered direct help. “Extremely sorry to hear about your situation. Times are tough, please dm your resume," a comment read.
“DM your CV bro, let me see if I can refer anywhere," another user wrote.
In an update, the engineer said the response deeply moved him. “The kind words, the DMs, the opportunities people shared, I literally cried reading through them," he said, adding that the support gave him hope again.
