September 2026 money changes

September 2026 money changes: Key ITR, immigration, e-KYC and SGB dates you need to know
September has begun, bringing a fresh set of money-related changes and important financial dates for taxpayers, investors and households. While the August 31 deadlines for certain ITR filers and LPG e-KYC have now passed, September has several dates to watch, including changes to international travel procedures and Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) premature redemption windows. Here are the key dates and changes to keep in mind during the month.
ITR deadline: What happens after August 31?
The August 31 deadline has passed for taxpayers earning income from a business or profession whose accounts are not required to be audited to file their income tax return for assessment year 2026-27.
Also Read : September 1 new rules: Boarding pass stamping ends at immigration
For taxpayers whose accounts are subject to tax audit, the ITR filing deadline is October 31, 2026.
Taxpayers who missed the August 31 deadline can still file a belated return. However, filing late can result in additional costs and the loss of certain tax benefits that may otherwise have been available if the return had been filed within the prescribed deadline.
One can face a late fee under Section 234F of up to Rs 5,000, or Rs 1,000 if your total income is below Rs 5 lakh. Then there is interest at 1 percent per month on unpaid tax under Section 234A. Most importantly, one loses the ability to carry forward business and capital losses to future years.
Additionally, a belated return forces the calculation into the new regime by default, removing planned deductions under the old regime.
LPG e-KYC deadline: August 31 deadline has passed
The August 31 deadline for domestic LPG consumers to complete Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC has also passed.
Oil marketing companies had asked LPG customers to complete the verification process through their LPG provider’s digital channels or by visiting their local distributor.

Consumers who have not completed the process should check with their LPG distributor or service provider on the status of their account and whether any further action is required.
International travel rules from September 1
Starting September 1, 2026, passengers travelling internationally from India will no longer be required to get their boarding passes stamped at immigration counters.
The Bureau of Immigration is moving towards a more digital departure process, allowing travellers to present either an electronic boarding pass on their mobile phone or a printed copy during immigration formalities.
The move is expected to simplify the airport departure process and eliminate an additional step for international travellers. However, passengers will still need to carry all required travel documents, including a valid passport and, where applicable, a visa.
Airline check-in requirements, security screening and other immigration formalities will continue to apply as usual.
Fixed Deposits
Fixed deposit (FD) investors should not confuse September’s changes with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) revised framework for bulk deposits.
The Reserve Bank of India’s revised framework for bulk deposits will come into effect from October 1, 2026. Under the new rules, banks will have to publish the interest rates applicable to bulk deposits of Rs 3 crore or more on their websites every business day. They will also be required to offer the same interest rate across branches for deposits that fall under the same category and are accepted on the same date.
The changes are mainly aimed at improving transparency for large depositors. For retail FD investors, the new rules do not mean that existing deposits will be repriced or that their contracted interest rates will change automatically.
