September 1 new rules: Boarding pass stamping ends at immigration
From September 1, international passengers departing from India will no longer be required to get their boarding passes stamped at immigration counters. The Bureau of Immigration has introduced the change to simplify the departure process and make immigration clearance faster and more convenient for travellers.
What changes from September 1?
At present, international passengers may be required to show their boarding pass during immigration clearance, after which the document could be stamped by an immigration officer. From September 1, this stamping requirement will be removed.
The Bureau of Immigration has communicated the revised procedure to airport operators, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other stakeholders. The new arrangement is expected to make the immigration process more streamlined by eliminating the physical stamping step.

Can passengers use an e-boarding pass?
Yes. International travellers will be able to display their boarding passes on their smartphones at immigration counters. This means passengers who have already obtained an e-boarding pass will not need to print it solely for the purpose of getting an immigration stamp.
Physical boarding passes will also remain valid. However, passengers carrying a printed copy should not expect it to receive an immigration stamp under the new system.
Travellers enrolled under the Fast Track Immigration–Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) can also use e-boarding passes at designated e-gates, according to the Bureau of Immigration.
Why has boarding pass stamping been discontinued?
The decision is aimed at reducing inconvenience for passengers and making immigration clearance more efficient. Officials have also flagged instances where boarding passes were difficult to read because of unclear or incorrect stamping.
Removing the requirement is therefore expected to reduce paperwork and avoid problems associated with physical stamps, while allowing immigration authorities to move towards a more digital process.
What should international passengers do?
Passengers departing from India will still have to complete all applicable immigration formalities. The key difference is that the boarding pass itself will no longer need an immigration stamp.
