Samay Raina Brings Up Kashmiri Pandit Exodus On India's Got Latent, Asks Munawar Faruqui To React: 'Bol Ab Ispe'
A members-only episode of India’s Got Latent featured a moment when Samay Raina referred to his Kashmiri roots.
The exchange began after contestant Vanika Raikta, during a chat with the panel comprising Raghav Juyal, Munawar Faruqui, Niharika NM, Rohan Joshi and Samay Raina, was asked whether she came from a wealthy family. Vanika said that her family owns apple orchards in Shimla. She added that although her brother had sold a portion of the land, they still owned several orchards, while both her parents worked as government teachers.
Raghav Juyal Brings Up Samay’s Kashmir Connection
After hearing about the apple orchards, Raghav Juyal turned to Samay and said, “Tumhara bhi toh tha na seb ka bagicha Kashmir mein?" Samay replied, “Hamara toh bahut kuch tha."
The comment seemed to refer to the displacement of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley during the insurgency, an experience Samay has spoken about publicly in the past.
Samay Turns The Moment Into A Joke
As Raghav gently patted Samay on the back, Samay turned to fellow panellist Munawar Faruqui and jokingly said, “Bol ab ispe (Now, talk about this)?"
Munawar immediately replied, “It wasn’t me," drawing laughter from those on the panel and the audience.
Samay Has Spoken About Kashmiri Pandit Exodus Before
This is not the first time Samay has spoken about his family’s connection to Kashmir. Earlier this year, in his stand-up special, he recalled that his family had to leave the Valley after militancy escalated, saying they fled to survive. On the Dostcast podcast, he spoke at length about the 1990 Kashmiri Pandit exodus, how his family left the Valley overnight and the lasting impact it had on them.
Samay had credited Kashmiri Muslims in saving his family. On the same podcast, he recalled, “My aunt was the brave one: she quietly went to the clinic where my grandfather worked. Luckily, he had so much goodwill that the Kashmiri Muslims there helped him and the family escape. They said nothing would happen to him because he had done so much for people. It was the Kashmiri Muslims who helped my grandfather get out of that situation."
