Russia-Ukraine war now spilling over to become European crisis?
European nations face heightened tensions amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. A Russian spy ship neared UK waters. Romania and Poland scrambled jets after Russian attacks and a drone breach. Moldova summoned the Russian ambassador over airspace violations. The European Union is preparing to speed up military asset movement across the continent. Britain issued a stern warning to Russia regarding territorial incursions.
Chances of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war spiralling into a larger regional conflict grew on Wednesday as tensions brewed across Europe.
On the west side, a Russian spy ship Yantar was detected on the edge of UK waters north of Scotland while on the easterm side, NATO members Romania and Poland scrambled fighter jets after Russian attacks in neighbouring Ukraine, with Bucharest saying a drone breached the country's airspace. Moldova, which lies between Romania and Ukraine, also reported a drone breach, summoning the Russian ambassador. Meanwhile the European Union (EU) took aim at the red tape and bottlenecks hampering its ability to move military assets swiftly across the continent should a conflict erupt with Russia.
Britain Warns
Britain warned Russia that it was ready to deal with any incursions into its territory. Defence Secretary John Healey said the Russian vessel had directed lasers at pilots of surveillance aircraft monitoring its activities. "My message to Russia and to Putin is this: We see you. We know what you're doing,'' Healey said during a briefing in London. "And if the Yantar travels south this week, we are ready."
British officials said the Yantar is part of the Russian navy, designed to conduct surveillance in peacetime and sabotage during times of war. Because of this, the UK and its allies track the ship and work to deter its operations whenever it approaches British territorial waters. "It is part of a Russian fleet designed to put and hold our undersea infrastructure and those of our allies at risk," Healey said, referencing attacks on pipelines and cables under the Baltic Sea earlier this year.
Drones in Romania
Also on Wednesday, Romania's defence ministry said that following Russian air strikes on Ukraine, "for a few minutes, the signal of a drone was detected, which had entered approximately eight kilometres (five miles) into national airspace" before it disappeared from the radar.
The drone then "reappeared intermittently on radar for approximately 12 minutes," the ministry said, with phone alerts sent to residents in the affected regions.
Two "F-16s of the Romanian Air Force were scrambled," the ministry added, saying that "no cases of aircraft impact with the ground have been reported".
"Teams of specialists are ready to begin ground searches," it added. Moldova also reported its airspace was breached by a drone during the night and decided to summon the Russian ambassador on Thursday "to convey the firm protest" over the "serious violation of national sovereignty", announced the foreign ministry.
EU Readies Itself
The EU, meanwhile, is readying itself should a conflict erupt with Russia one day. One European official summed up the challenge succinctly: How do you ensure a column of tanks stationed in Spain "doesn't reach Poland after the war"?
For now, that situation is far from guaranteed.
Currently, tanks and other heavy equipment still require country-by-country authorisations to transit through EU territory. Even with permits in hand, convoys often have to take lengthy detours to avoid roads or bridges too weak to bear their weight. "Speed is the cornerstone of warfare and deterrence," EU defence chief Andrius Kubilius told reporters ahead of Wednesday's presentation of a European Commission plan to address the challenge.
