Ravi Valecha, who worked as a child actor in around 300 films across many languages, has spoken up about the abuse he experienced as a child in the film industry. The actor, who often played younger versions of Amitabh Bachchan’s characters, said the incidents began when he was around eight and happened three times.
Valecha spoke about his experiences in an interview with The Indian Express, recalling how he struggled to tell anyone about what was happening to him. He said the fear and silence stayed with him for years before therapy helped him confront what he had buried.
Ravi Valecha Says Abuse Started When He Was 8
Ravi Valecha recalled that one of the first incidents happened at a dubbing studio. An older man from the industry asked him to sit on his lap, leaving the young actor uncomfortable.
The most disturbing incident, however, involved a young secretary who had been hired to accompany him to film shoots. Valecha said the secretary would touch him inappropriately while they travelled in taxis and cars.
He was around 11 or 12 when the secretary later abused him in a hotel room while his parents were not there. The secretary was sharing the room with him at the time. Recalling how helpless he felt, Valecha said, “What do I do?"
‘You Can’t Tell Anybody’: Ravi Valecha On Staying Silent
Ravi Valecha said he was scared to speak about what was happening, particularly because he had to continue travelling with the same person for work. “You can’t tell anybody… but you have to go with that person day in and day out," he said.
He also said he felt there was no one he could approach about the abuse. “There was nobody I could talk to," Valecha said, adding that he feared his parents might not believe him.
The actor said he carried the experience with him for years. The anger he felt over what happened eventually affected his personal life as well.
Ravi Valecha Worked With Amitabh Bachchan As A Child Actor
Valecha became a familiar face in Hindi films during the 1970s and 1980s. He often played younger versions of Amitabh Bachchan’s characters and appeared in films including Coolie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Mr Natwarlal, Fakira, Tumhare Bina, Khuddar, Nastik, Parichay, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Karz, Seeta Aur Geeta and Desh Premee.
How Therapy Helped Ravi Valecha Deal With The Trauma
Ravi Valecha later turned to therapy, where he began confronting experiences he had pushed away for years. He said the process made him realise how deeply the memories had affected him. “I did not know how deeply embedded that was in my mind, which came out in the therapy. I myself had buried everything. Six months of therapy changed everything. Today I’m very light. I don’t mind speaking to anybody about it."
Despite working extensively as a child artiste, he eventually moved away from acting.
The film industry can better protect children from abuse by making therapy mandatory for young performers, increasing monitoring of children, and establishing a preventive child protection framework.
