Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026: India’s Participation, Dates, Games – All You Need To Know
Milano Cortina 2026 marks the first joint city Winter Olympics, with over 3,000 athletes from 90 nations. India sends Arif Mohammad Khan and Stanzin Lundup.
The 25th edition of the Winter Olympic Games will officially begin on Friday, February 6. Milano Cortina 2026 will mark the first time that two cities will jointly host the Winter Olympics, and it is the fourth time Italy will stage the Winter Games. Italy previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, in 1960 in Rome, and most recently in 2006 in Turin.
More than 3,000 athletes from over 90 countries are expected to compete in the Milano Cortina Winter Games. The event will feature 116 medal events across 16 sporting disciplines over 19 days, promising a busy and action-packed schedule.
India will be represented by two athletes at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games: Arif Mohammad Khan and Stanzin Lundup. Arif Mohammad Khan has qualified in Alpine skiing, while Stanzin Lundup will compete in cross-country skiing, continuing India's presence in winter sports on the global stage.
While the Winter Olympic Games began in 1924, India made its debut in 1964. Including the upcoming Milano Cortina Olympics, India has participated in 11 Winter Olympic editions, with 17 different athletes representing the country over the years.
Among them, Shiva Keshavan is India's most experienced Winter Olympian, having competed in luge in six editions of the Winter Olympics. At the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, Arif Mohammad Khan made history as the first Indian to directly qualify for two events: slalom and giant slalom. Despite regular participation, India is still in pursuit of its first Winter Olympic medal.
The Opening Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will take place at the iconic San Siro Stadium in Milan, the home ground of football clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan. Around 60,000 spectators are expected at the grand event. Pope Leo has urged world leaders to use the platform of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics to promote peace and unity. Nations such as Norway, China, and the United States are expected to dominate the medal tally.
