Nitish Kumar Likely To Resign Today — Who Will Be Bihar’s Next CM?
Nitish Kumar is likely to relinquish the top post to make way for a BJP-led NDA government. Who will be Bihar’s next chief minister? Read the story to know the frontrunners.
Bihar is all set for a defining political transition today. Nitish Kumar, Bihar’s longest-serving CM, is likely to submit his resignation to the Governor this afternoon, making way for a new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA government in the state. Several names, including Samrat Choudhary, Nityanand Rai, Lakhendra Paswan and Shreyasi Singh, are doing the rounds for the top post. However, speculations are rife that the BJP may spring a surprise.
Kumar, the state’s longest-serving CM, took all by surprise last month when he announced that he was seeking election to the Rajya Sabha. The JD(U) supremo, who turned 75 recently, had led the NDA to a resounding victory in the assembly polls held in November last year.
Three back-to-back meetings are scheduled for today in Bihar.
It will be the first opportunity for the BJP to have its “own chief minister” in Bihar, which has, so far, been the only state in the Hindi heartland where the seat of power has eluded the party. BJP has named Shivraj Singh Chouhan as a “central observer”, who would oversee the change of guard.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who holds the crucial Home portfolio in the outgoing government, is said to be the frontrunner among contenders for the top job. However, BJP leaders in the state, who have been making frantic visits to Delhi in the recent past, are keeping their cards close to the chest. “Who will be the next CM is a decision to be taken by our central leadership,” minister Dilip Jaiswal, who is a former state BJP president, had said a day ago, adding, “I am not at all in the race”.
Samrat Choudhary
Many recalled that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had promised to make Samrat Choudhary “a big man” during the assembly polls as his name started floating as the top runner. Samrat Choudhary belongs to the Koeri community, the second-most populous OBC group in Bihar after the Yadavs.
Although Choudhary is relatively new to the BJP, he is said to fit the bill because he enjoys the confidence of Nitish Kumar. Also, his elevation could ensure that the ‘Luv Kush’ (Kurmi Koeri) equation nurtured by Kumar during his 20-year-rule remained intact in favour of the NDA, after the JD(U) supremo’s departure.
Apart from Choudhary, names of Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai and state ministers Lakhendra Paswan and Shreyasi Singh are also doing the rounds. All these leaders fit the bill in different ways, BJP sources told news agency PTI.
Nityanand Rai
Nityanand Rai’s elevation is also possible, suggest reports. Rai belongs to the Yadav community and brings the promise of support of the largest caste group in Bihar, which has been with Lalu Prasad’s RJD, the BJP’s principal rival in the state, for decades.
Lakhendra Paswan
Lakhendra Paswan is a Dalit, and his elevation could help the BJP transcend its “pro-upper caste” image, which brings its own disadvantages in the Hindi heartland, where the Mandal agitation of the 1990s has cast a long shadow, the sources said.
Shreyasi Singh
The BJP has also been trying to present itself as a champion of gender equality, by pushing through the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ that ensures 33 per cent reservation to women in both Houses of Parliament. This makes Shreyasi Singh’s case stronger. Singh, in her 30s, is a Rajput. Her elevation could be projected as the party giving preference to young blood and a woman leader, observers suggested.
Speculations are rife that the BJP may spring a surprise. The BJP sources admitted that there was a strong possibility of the central leadership springing a “surprise”, citing examples of many states ruled by the party, where less fancied leaders have landed the top job in the recent past.
