Neurosurgeon Reveals 8 Daily Habits That Can Harm Your Brain

Neurosurgeon Reveals 8 Daily Habits That Can Harm Your Brain
Your brain works around the clock. It helps you think, remember, move, sleep, make decisions and even control your emotions. But despite being the body’s command centre, brain health often gets overlooked until something goes wrong.
That’s a worrying trend, especially since neurological disorders are becoming increasingly common. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), brain-related conditions—including stroke, dementia, migraine, epilepsy and other neurological disorders—now affect more than one in three people worldwide.
The good news? Many risks to brain health develop gradually and are linked to everyday lifestyle habits, meaning they can often be prevented.
“As a brain and spine surgeon, I often see people focus on brain health only after symptoms appear. In reality, protecting the brain starts with the small choices we make every day," says Dr. Ishwar Chandra Premsagar, Brain & Spine Surgeon at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC), Delhi.
Here are eight everyday habits that may be silently harming your brain—and what you can do instead.
1. Not Getting Enough Sleep
Sleep is when the brain repairs itself, processes memories and restores energy for the next day. Consistently sleeping too little can affect concentration, memory, decision-making and emotional well-being.
Many people stay up late for work, binge-watching or endless scrolling, believing they can make up for lost sleep later. However, irregular sleep patterns can gradually affect brain function.
“The most refreshing and restorative sleep usually occurs between 10 pm and 4 am. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is one of the simplest ways to protect brain health," Dr Premsagar says. What to do instead:
Consult a doctor if you snore heavily, wake up gasping or feel unusually sleepy during the day, as these may be signs of sleep apnoea.
2. Sitting For Hours Without Moving
A desk job may be good for your career, but it isn’t always good for your brain.
Long periods of sitting can reduce blood circulation and increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure—all of which can affect brain health over time.
“Even subtle exercises performed throughout the day can make a difference. Every bit of movement counts," Dr Premsagar explains. What to do instead:
Include activities like brisk walking, cycling or swimming in your weekly routine.
3. Spending Too Much Time On Screens
Whether it’s work emails, social media or streaming platforms, screens have become an unavoidable part of daily life. But excessive screen time can lead to mental fatigue, poor focus and disturbed sleep.
Constant multitasking and information overload also make it harder for the brain to concentrate. What to do instead:
4. Eating Poorly And Not Drinking Enough Water
Your brain depends on a steady supply of nutrients and water to function properly.
A diet packed with sugary drinks, ultra-processed foods, fried snacks and unhealthy fats can increase the risk of inflammation, diabetes and blood vessel damage, all of which may affect the brain.
Skipping meals and dehydration can also leave you feeling tired, unfocused and mentally sluggish. What to do instead:
5. Smoking And Drinking Alcohol
Smoking damages blood vessels and significantly increases the risk of stroke. Excessive alcohol can impair memory, judgment, sleep and long-term brain function.
“Quitting tobacco in any form and avoiding alcohol altogether is one of the best investments you can make for your brain and overall health," says Dr Premsagar.
What to do instead: Seek professional help or de-addiction support if you’re finding it difficult to quit.
6. Living With Constant Stress
Stress is unavoidable, but staying stressed all the time is not. Persistent stress can interfere with sleep, concentration, mood and blood pressure. Over time, it may contribute to anxiety, fatigue and reduced mental performance.
“The brain needs time to recover just like the body does. Relaxation isn’t a luxury—it’s an important part of preventive healthcare," Dr Premsagar says.
What to do instead: Practise meditation, yoga, deep breathing, journaling, or take regular walks. If stress or anxiety starts affecting your daily life, don’t hesitate to speak to a mental health professional.
7. Ignoring Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar And Cholesterol
High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol often develop silently without causing noticeable symptoms.
Left untreated, they can damage blood vessels that supply the brain, increasing the risk of stroke, memory problems and cognitive decline.
What to do instead: Schedule regular health check-ups, especially if you have a family history of these conditions or other risk factors. Take prescribed medicines regularly and don’t stop treatment just because you’re feeling well.
8. Ignoring Early Warning Signs
One of the biggest mistakes people make is brushing off neurological symptoms. Sudden weakness, slurred speech, facial drooping, seizures, severe headache, confusion, numbness, vision changes or loss of balance should never be ignored.
“In neurological emergencies such as stroke, every minute matters. Seeking immediate medical attention can significantly improve outcomes," says Dr Premsagar.
What to do instead: If you or someone around you experiences sudden neurological symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately instead of waiting to see if the symptoms improve.
Brain health is not built overnight—it is shaped by the choices you make every day. Prioritising quality sleep, staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, managing stress, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, staying hydrated and keeping lifestyle diseases under control can go a long way in protecting your brain.
As Dr Premsagar puts it, “Don’t wait for symptoms to start caring for your brain. The habits you build today can help preserve your memory, independence and quality of life for years to come."
Poor brain health habits can lead to reduced mental performance, anxiety, fatigue, impaired memory, focus, emotional balance, and increase the risk of serious neurological conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
I cannot provide advice on personal routines. However, sources suggest incorporating consistent movement, adequate sleep, a nutrient-rich diet, and mental stimulation to support brain health.
