'My Job Uses Just 3% Of My Degree': NIT Graduate’s Viral Video Sparks Massive Debate On Whether Degrees Still Matter
A graduate from the National Institute of Technology has gone viral after claiming that only a tiny portion of what she studied in college is actually useful in her current job.
The woman, identified as Manvi, shared her thoughts in a video posted on Instagram, where she reflected on the gap between academic learning and real-world corporate responsibilities. Her candid take struck a chord with many young professionals, especially those who have ended up working in fields unrelated to their degrees.
In the video, Manvi explained that despite earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from NIT, her present-day work hardly draws on what she studied during her four years in college.
“I have a degree from NIT in Chemical Engineering and my job has just used maybe 3% of it. Now, I’m not here to tell you that degrees are useless, but I’m here to tell you what nobody told me before spending four years figuring it out myself," she said.
Her post was accompanied by the caption, “More than half my engineering batch isn’t doing what they studied. And honestly? I get it."
Manvi went on to explain that many of her classmates are also working in industries that have little to do with their academic backgrounds.
“In fact, most of my batchmates are not doing what they studied. Okay, not even close. In college, I studied thermodynamics, mechanics, kinetics, you know, all those cool science stuff. But at work, I am just in excel meetings and figuring out things on internet by myself," she said.
According to Manvi, the most valuable factors in her career have not been technical subjects from college, but communication skills and the ability to constantly learn new things.
“Only thing that got me ahead was communication and upskilling. But yeah, I’m not bitter about it because my degree has only helped me to get to the interview, but after that, it’s just me," she added.
She also had advice for current students, saying that college should not be the only source of learning. She encouraged students to build practical skills, hobbies or side projects that could eventually become additional sources of income.
“So here is my honest take after living it: degree is just an entry ticket, it’s not the whole ride. Okay, if you are in college right now, then learn something on side. It can be anything: a skill, a tool, a hobby, anything which can make you money alongside. Not instead of your degree, just alongside it," she said.
The video quickly gained traction online, with many users sharing similar experiences from their own careers.
One user wrote, ““Degrees are just an ID Card"
“This is so true, most of us are doing jobs completely unrelated to our degrees," said another.
Another commented, “I am doing chemical engineering right now and you shocked me."
One expressed, “I totally understand .I am a civil engineer but currently working as banker and my hustle from my engineering days makes the pressure of my current job feel less."
