Thane district is getting ready for a major travel boost as a new metro line moves closer to launch. Mumbai Metro Line 5, being built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will soon connect Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan. The line will cover nearly 25 kilometres, which is expected to ease daily travel for a large number of commuters who depend on busy roads. The project is moving ahead in stages, with the first stretch from Kapurbawdi in Thane to Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi almost complete and services will begin by December 2026.
Reports say most of the main construction work on this section is already done. The remaining tasks include setting up signals, power systems and safety checks, which will be done soon. Once it opens, Metro Line 5 will become the third metro route in the Thane district.
The 24.90 km long route, known as the Orange Line, will include 15 stations. It will connect smoothly with the under-construction Metro Line 4, the upcoming Metro Line 12, and the existing Central Railway network. Once operational, the new corridor is expected to cut current travel time by nearly 50 to 75 per cent.
Mumbai Metro 5 Line: Stations, Budget And Expected Launch
As per MMRDA's official data, Metro Line 5 will begin at Balkum Naka and pass through several key areas, including Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, Gopal Nagar, Temghar, Rajnouli, Gove Gaon, Kon Gaon, Lal Chowki and Kalyan Station, before ending at Kalyan APMC. The project has a base cost of Rs 8,416.51 crore, including taxes and duties. By 2031, the line is expected to handle almost 3.02 Lakh passengers daily. The metro will have six coach and each train able to carry up to 1756 people.
Mumbai Metro 5 Line: How Much Work Is Done
Most of the construction work is close to completion. As of now, piling work for the viaduct and stations is 99.81% complete, while pile cap work has reached 99.78%. Pier construction stands at 99.80% and CIS pier caps are fully done. Pier cap viaduct erection has achieved 99.73% progress. U girder viaduct erection is 100% complete, along with spine station erection and wing erection. Deck slab work is also in the final stage, as its 96.72% completed so far.
Mumbai Metro: What Other Lines Are In Construction
Apart from Metro Line 5, work is also moving fast on other important metro routes in the region. The transport authority is preparing to start services on Metro Line 9, which will connect Dahisar to Kashigaon, very soon. At the same time, parts of Metro Line 4 and Line 4A are also nearly complete. The stretch between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction is planned to open between April and May.
