Marriage Is ‘Outdated,’ Says Jaya Bachchan, Sparks Debate— ‘Is She Promoting Live-In Relationships?’
Jaya Bachchan is known not only for her work in the film industry but also for speaking her mind fearlessly. Recently, at the We The Women event in Mumbai, she drew attention by openly criticising paparazzi culture and commenting on marriage. She spoke about how some photographers behave at public events, often making careless remarks while clicking pictures. Due to this, Jaya Bachchan said she has almost “zero connection" with the paparazzi.
The conversation then shifted to her granddaughter, Navya, when host Barkha Butt asked if she hoped to see her settle down soon. Smiling, the Sholay star said she doesn't want her granddaughter to marry just yet and even called marriage an “outdated concept."
Ever since Jaya Bachchan shared her opinion publicly, social media users, fans, and critics have flooded online platforms with their reactions and views on her stance.
Quick Recap Of What Jaya Bachchan Said
During a segment, Barkha Dutt asked Jaya Bachchan if she believes marriage is an old-fashioned concept. She also inquired whether Jaya wants her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, to get married.
The veteran actress quickly said, “I don't want Navya to get married. I'm a grandmother now. Navya turns 28 in a few days. I think I'm too old to advise young girls today how to bring up children. Things have changed so much. Today, these little children are so smart. They are so smart, they'll outsmart you. Just enjoy life."
Soon after, the segment was clipped and shared widely on social media.
Reacting to the post, one user wrote, “I know Leftists are trying hard to destroy the ‘Family System' in Bharat to create a characterless society. But Jaya Bachchan is not even a Leftist. She's just purely disgusting."

Another shared, “Is she now promoting live-in relationships as the new normal for a civilisation that has regarded marriage as sacred for 5000 years? In Indian culture, a wife isn't just a partner, she's Ardhangini, the literal half of her husband's being. This isn't outdated patriarchy; it's a profound spiritual concept of completeness, mutual respect, and lifelong commitment that has sustained families and communities for millennia. But perhaps Jaya ji has spent too long in Bollywood's bubble to understand this. Life isn't a film script where relationships change with the next scene. Real families, real commitments, real values, these aren't “concepts" you discard when they become inconvenient for your progressive posturing."

“I've no time for financially privileged women moaning about marriages. She didn't leave because she couldn't be BOTHERED to set up a home independently and not have the comforts and privileges the surname Bachchan brings to her life. I like Jaya ji, only in films," said another individual.

What's Jaya Bachchan's Relationship With Paparazzi?
Jaya Bachchan has a complicated relationship with the paparazzi, often seen scolding or turning them away. At the event, she once again addressed their behaviour, a remark that disappointed many.
“My relationship with the media is fantastic. I am the product of the media. But my relationship with paparazzi is zero. Who are these people? Are they trained to represent the people of this country? You call them media. I come from the media. My father was a journalist. I have immense respect, tremendous respect for such people. Just because they have a mobile, they can take your picture and say what they want and the kind of comments they pass, what kind of people are these people, what is their education? What is their background? Will they represent us? It's very strange," Jaya Bachchan said.
Reacting to her stance, an individual said, “She was such a fine actor, but Jaya Bachchan as a person is petulant and wears her entitlement as a pride. Why such contempt for reporters who do their jobs? Fire them if they cross the line, but don't be in an irritable & crabby mood all the time."

Another user pointed out that Jaya Bachchan shouts at paparazzi even when they simply say, “Bye Madam," and now she's openly justifying her behaviour.

One more added, “She is entitled to express her opinion. However, the same Jaya Bachchan who criticises the paparazzi for making inappropriate comments ends up doing exactly the same by body-shaming them and mocking their modest clothing and status, along with their inability to afford expensive cameras worthy of Queen Jaya."

Jaya Bachchan recalled a time when a staff member told her she was considered one of the most disliked personalities on social media. She said she doesn't care about such opinions, explaining that while people are free to dislike her, she has her own views about them. She also criticised paparazzi for acting like “intruders", sneaking into private spaces with their mobile cameras.
