Kerala Schools, Colleges To Remain Closed On December 9, 11 Due To Local Bodies Election
The Kerala Government has announced public holidays on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, and Thursday, December 11, 2025, for all public offices and educational institutions. Additionally, paid holidays have been declared for commercial undertakings in the state in connection with the Local Bodies Election 2025.
The holidays will be observed district-wise as follows:
On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the holiday will be observed in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam.
On Thursday, December 11, 2025, the holiday will be observed in the districts of Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Elections for 1,199 out of the 1,200 local bodies are scheduled for December 9 and 11. On election days, voting will be held from 7 am to 6 pm, and results will be published in real-time through the State Election Commission's “TREND 2025" portal. A total of 1,199 local bodies, including grama panchayats, block panchayats, district panchayats, municipalities, and corporations, will go to the polls.
Among the six corporations in Kerala, the BJP has high hopes for the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, where it currently sits in the opposition with 34 members in the 101-ward council. The party aims to take control of the corporation, which has been governed by the LDF for decades.
Initially, the contest in Thiruvananthapuram was viewed mainly as a battle between the LDF and the BJP, with the UDF reduced to just 10 members in the last local body elections.

Meanwhile, due to Cyclone Ditwah and the associated heavy rainfall warning, an order has been issued to close all educational institutions in three major districts of Tamil Nadu today, December 2nd.
