JEE Main 2025 registration: New exam pattern, negative marking, age limit removal and more
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced significant changes for JEE Main 2025, including the removal of optional questions and the introduction of negative marking for numerical value questions. Tie-breaking rules now prioritize subject-wise performance, and the age limit has been removed. The syllabus has also been reduced, with fewer exam centres.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) is preparing to open the registration window for JEE Main 2025, the engineering entrance examination that determines admission to premier technical institutes across India, as per a report by TOI. Along with this announcement, NTA has introduced six significant changes that will impact the exam format, eligibility criteria, and overall preparation for aspiring candidates.
These updates are designed to streamline the examination process and create uniformity in evaluation and ranking systems, which is crucial for students seeking admission to institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
Revised exam pattern removes optional questions
The JEE Main exam will return to its pre-pandemic pattern, eliminating optional questions previously introduced in Section B. Candidates must now answer all 25 questions in each subject—physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Paper 1, aimed at B.Tech aspirants, will have 75 questions total, including 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical value questions per subject. This change ensures that all candidates face the same number of questions, promoting a consistent evaluation process.
Negative marking applies to numerical value questions
For the first time, negative marking will be applied to numerical value questions (NVQs). Earlier, penalties were only imposed for incorrect multiple-choice answers. This new rule means candidates must exercise greater caution when attempting NVQs, as wrong answers will now reduce their overall scores, emphasizing the need for accuracy.
New tie-breaking rules focus on exam performance
The tie-breaking criteria for candidates with equal scores have been revised. Previous considerations such as age and application number have been removed. The updated system prioritizes subject-wise scores, ranking candidates first by mathematics, then physics, and chemistry. If a tie still persists, the ratio of incorrect to correct answers will be examined across and within these subjects. If unresolved, candidates will share the same rank.
JEE Main age limit removed from eligibility criteria
The age restriction for JEE Main applicants has been removed, allowing candidates of any age who meet educational qualifications to apply. This change widens access to the exam, enabling older candidates or those who have had educational breaks to participate.
Reduction in exam centres and cities
The total number of exam centres has decreased from 300 last year to 284 this year, affecting both domestic and international locations. International centres have reduced from 24 to 14, with several cities in countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Hong Kong removed. In India, notable changes include a reduction in exam cities in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, while Telangana and Maharashtra have seen slight increases. Candidates are advised to review the updated list carefully before selecting exam locations.
JEE Main syllabus reduced
The JEE Main syllabus has been revised to exclude certain topics, continuing changes made in the previous year. In physics, topics like Scalars & Vectors, Vector Addition and Subtraction, Scalar & Vector Products, Unit Vectors, and Resolution of Vectors have been removed. Chemistry has also seen the removal of entire chapters such as States of Matter, Surface Chemistry, and General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals. Simplifications or deletions in P-Block elements topics have been implemented. The mathematics syllabus remains unchanged from last year, retaining previous removals such as Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations, Coordinate Geometry, and Three Dimensional Geometry.
