Most iPhone leak seasons follow a predictable pattern. Leaks trickle in, they mostly agree with each other, and by launch day there are few real surprises left. This year is turning out a little differently.
With Apple’s September event now just two months away, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has become the subject of a genuine disagreement among the very people who usually agree on these things. Here’s the full story, pieced together from the latest reporting.
The battery leak everyone agrees on
Let’s start with the one thing nobody’s arguing about. Chinese regulatory filings, the kind of source that correctly predicted the iPhone 17 Pro’s battery specs last year, have revealed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max is set to get a 5,567mAh battery in its US variant, up from 5,088mAh on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
That’s an increase of nearly 500mAh, or roughly 10 percent, the biggest year-over-year battery jump the Pro Max line has seen in a while.
Interestingly, the standard iPhone 18 Pro isn’t getting nearly the same treatment. Its battery is only expected to grow from 4,252mAh to around 4,288mAh, barely a 1 percent bump. Apple appears to be deliberately widening the gap between its two Pro models this year, and the size of that gap is unusually large.
Estimated iPhone 18 Pro Max price for every variant
Based on the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s current India pricing, here’s what the iPhone 18 Pro Max could roughly cost if this Rs 28,600 increase holds across the lineup.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is currently priced at Rs 1,49,900 for the 256GB variant, Rs 1,69,900 for 512GB, Rs 1,89,900 for 1TB, and Rs 2,29,900 for the top-end 2TB model.
Add the estimated Rs 28,600 increase to each of these, and here’s roughly where the iPhone 18 Pro Max could land:
Here’s where the story gets interesting: is it actually getting thicker? This is where things split. Chinese leaker Ice Universe recently claimed the iPhone 18 Pro Max will measure around 9mm thick and weigh approximately 240 grams, making it about 0.25mm thicker and 7 grams heavier than the current model.
The logic behind this claim is straightforward: a bigger battery needs more physical space, so a thicker body would make sense as the trade-off.
But not everyone buying this. Macworld, in a July 9 update to its own reporting, specifically pushed back on this claim, stating plainly that its own information doesn’t corroborate a significantly thicker body.
Instead, sources suggest the body will stay roughly the same size as the current Pro Max, with the extra bulk showing up in a bigger camera bump instead, rather than the phone getting thicker overall.
So depending on which source you trust, you’re either getting a phone that’s noticeably chunkier in the hand, or one that looks and feels almost identical to what you’re already used to, just with a slightly more prominent camera housing. It’s a genuinely unresolved question right now, and it won’t be settled until Apple actually shows the device.
The chip: Apple’s first real leap in years
Away from the size debate, there’s much more consensus on what’s happening inside the phone. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is widely expected to run Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer manufacturing process, a first for any Apple chip. Estimates point to roughly 15 percent faster performance and around 30 percent better power efficiency compared to the current A19 Pro.
This chip is also expected to use a newer packaging method that integrates RAM directly onto the same wafer as the processor components. Practically speaking, this should free up internal space, which may be part of why Apple can fit in that larger battery in the first place, regardless of how the thickness debate resolves.
The Dynamic Island shrinks, sort of
Camera and display cutout changes have been a recurring theme in leaks for months now, and the picture has actually gotten clearer, not murkier, on this front. Early reports suggested Apple would move Face ID components entirely under the display, leaving just a small front camera cutout.
More recent and consistent leaks have walked that back, suggesting only the infrared sensor moves under the glass this year, while the selfie camera stays visible in a small punch-hole. Either way, expect a genuinely smaller Dynamic Island compared to current models, even if it’s not the dramatic disappearing act some initial reports suggested.
A camera upgrade built around control, not just resolution
The most talked-about camera change isn’t a megapixel bump, it’s a variable aperture main camera, something no iPhone has had before. This would let the camera mechanically adjust how much light hits the sensor, similar to how a proper camera lens works, giving photographers real control over exposure and depth of field rather than relying purely on software processing.
A new colour, and Apple’s own modem expands
Reports consistently point to a new shade called Dark Cherry joining the lineup, described as a deep red with a hint of purple, likely alongside Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver options. On connectivity, Apple’s own C2 modem is expected to expand across the Pro lineup outside the US, potentially bringing 5G-based satellite features beyond just emergency messaging.
When it is likely to launch
As of the most recent reporting, Apple’s iOS 27 developer betas have stayed exactly on schedule, with the third beta arriving right on time and the public beta following around July 13 to 14, a good sign that things are progressing smoothly behind the scenes.
Based on this pattern, the September keynote is widely expected to land on Wednesday, September 9, at 10am Pacific, with pre-orders following on Friday, September 11, and the phones going on sale around September 18.
There’s also a bigger structural change this year worth remembering.
Apple is expected to launch only its most expensive iPhones in September, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone, while the standard iPhone 18 and a cheaper iPhone 18e get pushed all the way to spring 2027. It’s the biggest change to Apple’s release cadence in years.
