Indian Woman In America Shares One Workplace Habit She Learnt From Her Peers: ‘Lately Realized That It Is A Skill’
An Indian woman working in the US has opened up about a workplace lesson she learnt from her American colleagues. Harini, who said she is the only Indian in her office, explained how her approach to speaking up changed after spending more time around them.
She said she often noticed that her American colleagues were comfortable sharing their thoughts even when they did not have all the answers. At first, she wondered if they simply knew more than she did. Over time, she realised that confidence, rather than knowledge, was often the bigger difference.
She Noticed Her Colleagues Spoke Up Sooner
“I am the only Indian in my entire office and for years I thought that my American peers knew something which I didn’t. It’s not that I didn’t know anything, but they were more comfortable speaking before they had all the answers," she said.
Harini said her upbringing in India had taught her to be careful with her words and speak only after thinking through what she wanted to say.
“I mean, growing up in India, I was taught that you have to think twice before you speak and don’t speak until you’re too sure about it. And that mindset, I guess it helped me in the school. But I think it’s taking me nowhere here in the workspace," she said.
She explained that this habit can sometimes make people hold back at work, especially when discussions are moving quickly.
She Realised Waiting Can Mean Missing The Chance
Harini said she noticed that people who were only partly sure about an idea could still get their thoughts heard because they were willing to speak. Meanwhile, those who waited until they were completely certain could miss the opportunity to contribute.
“The room will never reward the idea which you never put it out, right? So, this isn’t about pretending to know everything, it’s about not waiting until you’re 100% sure before you contribute because while you are waiting to be perfect, someone else is already moving the conversation forward," Harini said.
For her, the lesson was not about acting as if one knows everything. Instead, she believes people should be willing to share an idea even when they are still thinking it through.

She Now Sees Confidence As Something People Can Learn
Looking back at her experience, Harini said her idea of confidence has also changed. She once thought confidence was something people were simply born with, but her time in the workplace made her see it differently.
“So I believe, at least I started to believe that confidence in these rooms is a skill and for the longest time I thought confidence is something that comes by birth and I lately realized that it is a skill which can be learned."
Her comments struck a chord with several internet users, especially Indians who said they had experienced a similar difference after moving abroad.
A user wrote, “So true. They speak their minds freely. We were raised to hold back until we were absolutely sure. Even at home, speaking up wasn’t always encouraged, so many of us grew up hesitant to voice our opinions. But in North America, it’s difficult to climb the career ladder without speaking up and making yourself heard."
Another commented, “‘Confidence is a skill.’ Couldn’t agree more."

Indians can adapt to American workplace communication styles by learning to speak up even when they are not 100% sure, as confidence in voicing opinions is a skill that can be developed.
Cultural differences in communication can include varying comfort levels with silence, with some cultures preferring constant conversation while others are content with quiet togetherness. Workplace communication styles also differ, such as the emphasis on direct communication in some US teams compared to other cultures. Additionally, some cultures may have more hierarchical communication, where founders or superiors maintain a greater distance in conversations.
Speaking up and making oneself heard is important for career advancement in North America. An Indian woman working in the US observed that her American colleagues were comfortable sharing their thoughts even without having all the answers, a skill she found crucial for career growth.
