India Gets Plenty Of Sunlight: So Why Are 90% Of People Still Deficient In Vitamin D?
Vitamin D3, often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin," is one of the most paradoxical nutrients of our time. Despite India’s abundant sunlight, nearly 70–90% of the population is believed to be deficient in Vitamin D. This deficiency is not merely a matter of weak bones; it is increasingly being linked to broader health concerns, ranging from compromised immunity to chronic diseases. Dr Akanksha Singh, Senior Cosmetologist, SENS Clinic believes understanding the sources, benefits and risks associated with Vitamin D3 is essential for maintaining long-term health.
What many people don’t realise is that Vitamin D is not a single compound but a family of fat-soluble vitamins that includes D1, D2 and D3. Of these, Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the most important for humans. Our skin naturally produces it when exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from the sun. A cholesterol derivative in the skin, known as 7-dehydrocholesterol, undergoes a transformation under sunlight to become Vitamin D3.
Vitamin D2, on the other hand, is produced by exposing plant sterols to ultraviolet energy. While both D2 and D3 perform similar functions, neither is biologically active until it is processed by the liver and kidneys into a usable form. This conversion enables Vitamin D to perform its vital functions throughout the body.
As Dr Singh explains, sunlight remains the most reliable source of Vitamin D. Just 15–20 minutes of midday sun exposure can help the body synthesise adequate amounts. However, modern lifestyles have significantly altered this equation. Urban living, air pollution, indoor work environments and the widespread use of sunscreens have all contributed to reduced natural sun exposure.
Food sources of Vitamin D are available but relatively limited. Eggs, salmon and cod liver oil are naturally rich in the vitamin, while products such as milk, breakfast cereals and orange juice are often fortified to help bridge the nutritional gap. Nevertheless, supplements have become one of the most practical ways for many individuals to maintain adequate Vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D3 is best known for its role in bone health. It facilitates the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestines, helping to maintain strong bones and teeth. Its discovery in the early 20th century marked a major breakthrough in the treatment of rickets, a disease that caused soft, weakened bones in children and often resulted in the characteristic appearance of bowed legs.
In adults, Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to osteoporosis, increasing the risk of fractures and skeletal weakness. However, as Dr Singh points out, the benefits of Vitamin D3 extend far beyond bone health.
Research has shown that Vitamin D receptors are present in multiple organs throughout the body, suggesting a much broader role in human physiology. Emerging evidence points to its involvement in immune regulation, cellular growth and mood regulation. Vitamin D deficiency has also been associated with depression and seasonal affective disorder. While some of these links continue to be studied, the growing body of research underscores Vitamin D3’s importance in supporting overall well-being.
Like all nutrients, balance is essential. The increasing popularity of supplements has led to rare but important cases of Vitamin D toxicity. Excessive intake can result in hypercalcemia, a condition characterised by elevated calcium levels in the blood, which may cause nausea, weakness and, in severe cases, kidney damage.
According to Dr Singh, the kidneys are particularly vulnerable because they play a central role in Vitamin D metabolism. This is why supplementation should always be approached with caution and under appropriate medical guidance.
Vitamin D3 is both a gift of nature and a challenge of modern living. As sedentary lifestyles and limited sun exposure make natural synthesis increasingly difficult, fortified foods and supplements are becoming necessary for many individuals. However, the solution is not to consume supplements indiscriminately. Instead, it lies in adopting a balanced approach that combines sensible sun exposure, informed dietary choices and responsible supplementation.
Dr Singh advises using supplements only when required and under medical supervision. Regular monitoring of Vitamin D levels, combined with professional guidance, can help ensure both safety and effectiveness.
Vitamin D3 is far more than a nutrient associated with bone health. From supporting immunity to influencing cellular function and mental well-being, its impact is remarkably wide-ranging. Yet, as with all aspects of health, awareness and moderation remain key.
In a country blessed with abundant sunlight yet burdened by widespread deficiency, the challenge lies not in scarcity but in lifestyle. As Dr Singh concludes, harnessing the power of Vitamin D3 requires a balanced blend of tradition and modernity, sunlight where possible, nutritious food where available and supplements where necessary. With this approach, the sunshine vitamin can truly live up to its name, strengthening not only our bones but our overall quality of life.
