'Extremely ambitious and illogical': Iran slams US 15-point peace plan as tensions spike ahead of Trump’s deadline
Iran is making its stance known, turning down the earlier 15-point peace blueprint proposed by the US. Conversely, a prospect for a ceasefire and reopening the critical Strait of Hormuz is on the table with a proposal mediated by Pakistan.
Hours ahead of a much-anticipated press conference by US President Donald Trump on the Iran conflict, Tehran signalled a tougher stance on ongoing diplomatic efforts, rejecting elements of the earlier proposed US-led peace framework, according to a report by Iran International. The Foreign Ministry said, “We have compiled and formalised our own set of demands.”
As per the report, Iranian Foreign Ministary spokesperson Esmail Baghaei described the proposed 15-point plan as unacceptable, calling it “extremely ambitious and illogical.” He said Iran has prepared its response to proposals conveyed through intermediaries and will announce it at an appropriate time.
The Foreign Ministry further said the US proposal is excessively demanding, and raised concerns over recent developments, stating that the possibility that the “pilot rescue in Isfahan” was a deceptive operation aimed at seizing Iran’s enriched uranium cannot be ignored. It also warned that a ceasefire could allow the opposing side to regroup and continue its actions.
Baghaei also reiterated that negotiations cannot proceed under pressure, warning that US threats to target infrastructure would be treated as violations of international law. He added that Iran’s priority remains national defence amid continuing hostilities, while diplomatic channels remain active alongside military considerations, as reported.
At the same time, diplomatic efforts appear to be continuing behind the scenes. According to Reuters, Iran and the United States have received a separate proposal aimed at ending hostilities, which could potentially take effect as early as Monday and lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.
Sources cited by Reuters said the framework was developed by Pakistan and shared with both sides overnight. The proposal reportedly outlines a two-stage approach, beginning with an immediate ceasefire followed by broader negotiations toward a comprehensive agreement.
"All elements need to be agreed today," the source said, adding that the initial understanding would be formalised through a memorandum of understanding concluded electronically via Pakistan, which is acting as the primary channel of communication in the discussions.Under the proposal, an immediate ceasefire would be followed by steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with a 15–20 day window envisioned for finalising a wider settlement. The plan, informally referred to as the "Islamabad Accord," would also include a regional framework governing the strategic waterway, with final in-person talks expected in Islamabad, Reuters reported.
There was no immediate official response from US or Iranian authorities on the latest proposal. Pakistan’s foreign office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi also declined to comment.
The developments come amid heightened tensions in West Asia, with multiple diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further escalation. As political deadlines approach, both sides continue to hold firm positions even as mediators attempt to bridge differences and push toward a possible ceasefire framework.
