Employee Working Overtime Gets Questioned By HR For Being 15 Minutes Late

Employee Working Overtime Gets Questioned By HR For Being 15 Minutes Late; Asks Internet, 'Am I F*cked?'
Got Question about the News?
An employee’s Reddit post about being pulled up by HR for arriving 15-20 minutes late has sparked a debate over workplace expectations. The employee claimed they had regularly worked overtime and weekends, but were still questioned about occasional delays during quieter days.
The employee, who joined an event company in May, said their official working hours are from 11 AM to 7 PM, with weekends designated as weekly offs. However, they claimed that the nature of the job often requires employees to stay back late or report to work on weekends whenever there is an event or an urgent requirement.
According to the employee, most Saturdays in July were working days, while they also had to work on some Sundays. Their manager, they said, has made it clear that employees are expected to stay late or come in on weekends when work demands it. The manager reportedly refers to the approach jokingly as “udya teer," essentially putting the work or event first and dealing with the consequences later.
The employee said they had no major issue with working long hours because they liked the company, their colleagues and the work they were learning. However, the situation became difficult after their workload was reduced.
Living more than two hours away from the office and commuting through heavy traffic and multiple trains, the employee said they began reaching the workplace around 11:15-11:20 AM on some days instead of exactly at 11 AM.
That eventually caught HR’s attention. When asked about the late arrivals, the employee explained that their commute was the reason. HR then reportedly asked what time they had left the office the previous day. After the employee said they had left at 6:45 PM, HR questioned why they were late the following morning.
The employee said they then reminded HR that they had worked overtime and reported to the office on Saturdays throughout July. They also pointed out that their manager had instructed employees to stay late or work weekends during busy periods, while they could leave accordingly when there was less work.
The conversation reportedly became tense, with the employee admitting that they were already frustrated and may have sounded more irritated than intended. When they highlighted the additional hours they had put in, HR allegedly responded, “What can I argue about that?"
The matter was subsequently discussed with the employee’s senior, after which their manager reportedly called them into a meeting and “shouted" at them over the issue.
The employee said the situation became more concerning when HR allegedly emailed their senior claiming they had been taking “too many leaves". According to the post, they had taken only two days off in August and one day in July, along with an additional day for a festival that was important to them.
The employee also said they had documentation to support their claims about overtime and weekend work. Their manager had made it mandatory for employees to manually record their working hours, allowing them to maintain a detailed attendance sheet showing the days they worked late and the Saturdays they reported to work.
“I have records of the days I worked late, Saturdays I worked, etc., going back to July," the employee wrote.
Despite feeling frustrated, the employee said they did not want the matter to become a confrontation with HR or management. They stressed that they were willing to work whenever the job required it but felt that their additional hours should not be overlooked while they were being questioned about occasional 15–20-minute delays.
The employee also explained that they had been unemployed for around four months before securing the current position and did not want to risk losing it. “I like the company, the people and the work I’m learning," they wrote, making it clear that their priority was to resolve the issue professionally rather than damage their relationship with management.
The post soon attracted responses from Reddit users, with some advising the employee to seek support from their manager while others warned that the situation could potentially escalate.
“You are slowly being trapped into become a office worm (like book worm) anyhow if you are learning and your boss is good, ask your boss to speak to HR for this delay of 15 min. It he supports you, you have HR backed off, if he gives you management rule, tell him politely you can work on weekdays only," said one user.
Another commenter took a more pessimistic view, writing, “Hey OP it looks like they are looking for excuses to fire you. Next will come PIP and then the exit, this may sound cynical but I would look for alternatives."
“Best is to say sorry with a simple reason like due to travel and traffic and come office on time and leave on time from now on. Frankly policy is policy rest everything don’t matter to HR , we have 3 days in a week in office and have to compensate via applying leave because we couldn’t come to office although it doesn’t matter if we regularly working late at night. No manager is going to fight with HR or upper management for you," said another.
Another commenter was far more critical of the situation, saying, “All this nonsense politics just to justify their job. manager and hr should be laid. esp hr. these email jobs need to go away. so many made up jobs where someone else is doing the real work. not a day goes by when i not think about choosing a different career path where i don’t have to deal with people with fake jobs."
“I would suggest by first asking for forgiveness if you were rude. In the events industry the standard is to finish work and not care about hour, so unless you want to get fired don’t keep to contracted hours only. Yeah it sucks, but that’s the work you chose. Also if arriving in office on time is an expectation you need to plan around it, aim to reach by 1030 if you need to start by 11. Work hours gets flexible with seniority and trust, and since you mentioned that you are on probation you haven’t built either in the company," another user said.
