Diabetes And Digestion: How Ancient Systems Of Healing Are Shaping Modern Dietary Approaches

Diabetes And Digestion: How Ancient Systems Of Healing Are Shaping Modern Dietary Approaches
Diabetes management in India has long been guided by modern medicine, but there is increasing recognition that traditional holistic systems, Ayurveda, naturopathy, yoga, and Unani medicine offer rich, complementary insights. These systems view diabetes not merely as a blood sugar disorder but as a metabolic and digestive imbalance rooted in the way the body processes food, energy, and internal toxins. Today, experts across these disciplines explain why digestion lies at the core of diabetes, and how rethinking diet and daily habits can transform long-term health outcomes.
Ayurveda: Strengthening Agni to Balance Blood Sugar
Dr Umashankar Sharma, Medical-In-Charge, Kailash Institute of Naturopathy, Ayurveda & Yoga, says, “Ayurveda sees diabetes primarily as a disorder of digestion and metabolism, governed by Agni, the body's digestive fire." He explains, “With weakening digestion, the body gets filled up with toxins (Ama), thus blocking the flow of energy and disrupting the function of insulin." Ayurveda therefore focuses not just on reducing sugar levels but on restoring digestive balance to improve overall metabolic efficiency.
Dr Sharma emphasizes fresh, seasonal, sattvic foods; whole grains such as barley, millets, and brown rice; and fibre-rich vegetables and legumes. Bitter and astringent foods, neem, methi, karela, and turmeric are particularly valued for their cleansing and insulin-enhancing properties. Equally important, he notes, is avoiding processed, fried, and overly sweet foods to prevent digestive stagnation.
He adds that mindful eating practices, specific spices like ginger, cumin, cinnamon, and fenugreek, and daily yoga or physical exercise such as Surya Namaskar and Pranayama help strengthen digestion, boost metabolism, and support blood sugar regulation. When daily habits align with one's Prakriti (body constitution), Dr Sharma says, patients experience “not only better glucose control but also the rewards of health and vigour."
Ayurvedic Diet Principles in Modern Diabetes Care
Echoing similar wisdom from a modern healthcare perspective, Dr. Navneet Agrawal, Chief Clinical Officer at BeatO, explains that Ayurveda views diabetes as “not only a blood sugar imbalance but also an imbalance in the body's metabolism. When digestion is weak, it can interfere with insulin function and overall energy balance."
Dr. Agrawal highlights simple dietary practices—eating warm, freshly prepared meals, avoiding overeating, and not allowing long gaps between meals—to stabilize both glucose levels and digestion. Fibre-rich foods such as lentils, whole grains, and vegetables naturally help regulate blood sugar.
He adds that Ayurvedic spices like turmeric, cinnamon, and fenugreek have supportive evidence for improving glucose metabolism. Mindful eating, aligned with the body's natural rhythms, also prevents sudden sugar spikes.
At BeatO, Dr. Agrawal notes a consistent trend: “When patients combine these time-tested dietary principles with modern glucose monitoring and medical guidance, their sugar control and digestion both improve significantly." This integrative approach, he says, works “with the body, not against it."
Unani Medicine: Restoring Balance Across Four Stages of Digestion
From the perspective of Unani medicine, diabetes is deeply connected to the functioning of the body's digestive and metabolic processes. Dr Naushad Ali Rana, Associate General Manager, Hamdard Wellness, Hamdard Laboratories India, explains that the system recognizes four stages of digestion, gastric, hepatic, vascular, and cellular. When the final stage weakens, tissues fail to utilize glucose effectively, leading to elevated blood sugar.
Unani physicians therefore focus on six essential lifestyle factors: clean air, balanced diet, adequate movement, mental relaxation, sound sleep, and timely elimination of waste. As Dr. Rana notes, “food quality and digestion hold the greatest influence," with rich and processed foods burdening the metabolism, while simple, seasonal, fibre-rich foods restore equilibrium and enhance insulin response.
He lists herbs and foods widely used in Unani for their glucose-lowering benefits, Jamun, Karela, Giloy, Methi, Kalonji, Darchini, and Amla as well as herbs for blood purification and gut health such as Neem, Chiraita, Kafoor, and Balela. Fibre-rich fruits including pomegranate, guava, apples, and oranges further improve digestion and nutrient absorption. Classical formulations like Jawarish Jalinoos, Safoof Giloy, and Qurs Ziyabetus support digestion and sugar metabolism.
A Converging Wisdom: Digestion as the Key to Diabetes Care
While Ayurveda, naturopathy, and Unani medicine differ in their frameworks, all three experts Dr. Sharma, Dr. Agrawal, and Dr. Rana converge on a powerful insight: diabetes cannot be managed effectively without strengthening digestion and metabolic balance.
In their combined view, mindful eating, fibre-rich and whole foods, digestive spices, simple lifestyle rhythms, and the avoidance of processed foods create conditions in which the body can use energy more efficiently and stabilize blood sugar naturally. When paired with modern monitoring and medical support, these ancient principles create a holistic, sustainable approach to diabetes care, one that supports the body's inner intelligence as much as its biological needs.
