Delhi’s winter pollution woes deepen, air quality could slip 'severely' by year-end

Dense fog continues to shroud the national capital, keeping air pollution in the very poor category for the third consecutive day and disrupting air traffic. While a slight improvement was noted, pollution levels are expected to persist and potentially worsen. Vehicular emissions and industrial output are significant contributors to the smog.
Dense fog continued to envelop the national capital on Thursday, pushing air pollution levels to remain in the very poor category for the third straight day and affecting air traffic across the city.
According to data from the Commission for Air Quality Management's SAMEER app, Delhi recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 358 at 7 am. A day earlier, the AQI had eased slightly to 334 from 354, helped by stronger winds flowing into the region.
Despite the brief improvement, no sustained relief is expected.
Delhi AQI: Pollution levels may spike by December 20
The Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi has forecast that pollution levels will likely stay within the same range until December 20 and may worsen to severe towards the end of the month. The Decision Support System, which assesses both local and regional sources contributing to Delhi's pollution, showed that emissions from Haryana's Jhajjar accounted for 16.53% of the city's pollutants. Vehicular emissions within Delhi followed closely at 16.32%, while industries in the capital and its surrounding areas contributed a little over 8%.
“Though westerly winds briefly blew at 8-10kmph during the day, a layer of shallow fog trapped the pollutants,” an official was quoted as saying by ToI.
Delhi combats fog, flight delays and foul air
Low visibility due to fog was also recorded across key monitoring stations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported visibility of 800 metres at Palam at 8 am and 700 metres at Safdarjung, Delhi's base station, at 8.30 am.
Although visibility was marginally better than in the past few days, flight operations remained impacted. As many as 24 flights were cancelled and more than 200 delayed. “Some flights were cancelled in advance. Others were impacted due to low visibility at other airports,” an official said.
Disruptions earlier in the week were more severe. On Tuesday, over 500 flights were delayed and more than 100 cancelled at the IGI Airport. On Monday, more than 800 flights faced delays, over 200 were cancelled and five were diverted.
The Met department has forecast the persistence of shallow fog in the region until December 20, with moderate fog expected in isolated areas. A yellow alert has been issued for moderate to dense fog on December 21 and 22.
On the weather front, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 24.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday, three degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 10.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees higher than the seasonal average.
Ban on construction, aim to reduce AQI levels by 40%
Meanwhile, Centre has signalled stricter, long-term measures to tackle Delhi-NCR's recurring winter air crisis.Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav on Wednesday directed local authorities to make provisions to ban demolition activities during the peak pollution period from October to December every year, and asked them to issue “immediate directions” for it, pending amendments to existing rules.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on action plans of municipal bodies in Delhi and Haryana's Sonipat, the minister also instructed authorities not to permit construction and demolition (C&D) activities unless proper C&D waste handling and processing infrastructure is identified and created within a 10-km radius of the construction site, reported ToI.
Calling for a more aggressive approach, Yadav asked all agencies to work in mission mode to achieve a 40% reduction in the AQI over the next one year. As part of traffic management measures, he directed the removal of illegal parking and encroachments from 62 identified congestion hotspots across Delhi.
The minister also called for fast-tracking the liquidation of legacy waste dump sites at Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur, with a target to deliver tangible results by the end of 2026.
“A detailed plan is to be prepared to identify road corridors and enable signal-free movement during peak traffic hours from 9 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 7 pm, in coordination with Delhi Police. Vehicles below BS-IV standards are not to be allowed on these corridors,” said an official statement outlining the outcomes of the meeting. The removal of stray animals from roads was also emphasised to reduce accidents and traffic bottlenecks.
Stressing that enforcement should not burden ordinary citizens, Yadav said penalties should not become an end in themselves. “Motivate stakeholders, persuade the public, and act firmly against defaulters,” he said.
