Defence Stocks Fire Up Amid US Iran Conflict: Mazagon Dock, Cochin Shipyard Jump Up To 9%
Defence Stocks Surge: Indian defence stocks are drawing renewed investor interest as the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States heightens geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. After witnessing a sharp correction following the massive rally seen in 2025, the sector is once again gaining traction on expectations of stronger defence spending and export opportunities.
The latest escalation in the Iran-Israel war has revived optimism around order inflows and long-term demand for defence equipment. The Nifty India Defence Index rose nearly 3% on Thursday, reflecting improved sentiment in the segment.
Shares of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Data Patterns (India), Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, and Cochin Shipyard were among the top gainers, surging as much as 9% during the session.
Investor sentiment also strengthened after reports that a United States submarine sank an Iranian warship with a torpedo in the Indian Ocean, further intensifying the conflict and reinforcing expectations of higher defence spending globally.
Defence stocks witnessed a sharp rally in 2025, with the Nifty India Defence Index surging nearly 83% in just three months from March and hitting a record high of 9,195 in June 2025. The rally was fuelled by strong investor sentiment after the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted operations against terrorist groups in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir under the codename Operation Sindoor.
Despite the strong momentum, analysts repeatedly cautioned that valuations had become stretched.
Those warnings eventually played out as the sector witnessed heavy profit booking later in the year. The defence index declined around 21% from its peak, slipping to roughly 7,000 levels by the end of 2025.
However, persistent geopolitical tensions and rising global conflict risks continued to provide underlying support to the sector.
So far in 2026, the defence index has gained over 7%, though several heavyweight stocks remain under pressure. Shares of Bharat Dynamics Limited have declined about 13.5% this year, while Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and BEML Limited are down around 11% each. Cochin Shipyard has fallen more than 10%, while Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders has slipped nearly 5% so far this year.
According to Putta Ravi Kumar, Defence Analyst at Choice Institutional Equities, the evolving geopolitical environment and rising global conflicts have made defence preparedness a strategic priority for many countries.
He noted that this trend is expected to drive sustained demand for advanced defence technologies, particularly in areas such as air defence systems — including QRSAM, MRSAM, LRSAM and Barak-8 — along with missile platforms and electronic warfare systems.
“Among listed companies, firms with strong exposure to missile systems, radar technologies and defence electronics are well positioned to benefit," Kumar said.
He added that Bharat Electronics Limited, Bharat Dynamics Limited and Data Patterns (India) are likely to remain key beneficiaries due to their technological capabilities, strong order books and growing participation in domestic and export-oriented defence programmes.
Despite short-term volatility in equity markets, India’s defence sector continues to remain structurally strong, said Harshal Dasani, Business Head at INVasset PMS.
He highlighted that the Union Budget 2026 allocated around Rs 7.85 lakh crore for defence spending, making it one of the largest defence budgets globally and underscoring India’s focus on military modernisation.
“A significant portion of this spending is directed towards capital procurement, with a strong emphasis on domestic manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative," Dasani said.
He also noted that the Ministry of Defence has cleared multiple procurement proposals covering aircraft, naval systems, missile platforms and electronic warfare equipment, strengthening the multi-year order pipeline for domestic defence manufacturers.
The government has also set an ambitious target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore in defence production by 2026, alongside rising defence exports.
According to Naren Agarwal, CEO of Wealth1, the recent momentum in defence stocks reflects a structural shift rather than a purely short-term reaction to geopolitical developments.
He noted that rising geopolitical uncertainty typically pushes governments to accelerate defence spending, and markets tend to price in these expectations early.
“Many defence stocks have already seen sharp re-rating over the past few years as order books expanded and earnings visibility improved," Agarwal said, adding that valuations in several companies have become relatively elevated following the rally since 2024.
Analysts believe stock performance in the sector may become more selective in the near term.
Dasani said future gains are likely to depend on fresh order announcements, execution timelines and export opportunities, even though the sector continues to benefit from strong policy support and rising defence budgets.
Agarwal advised investors to remain cautious despite the strong long-term outlook.
“Investors should avoid chasing momentum and instead focus on companies with strong balance sheets, proven execution capabilities and sustainable order visibility," he said.
Given the volatility often seen in defence stocks, he suggested adopting a staggered investment approach rather than making lump-sum investments.
