'Defamed The College': 30 Students, Including Student Union Leaders Suspended From Hansraj College Over Fest Misconduct

A major controversy has erupted at Delhi University’s Hansraj College after around 30 students, including four elected student union office-bearers, were suspended over alleged ‘misconduct’ related to the college’s annual fest.

The action has triggered intense political and academic debate. Student leaders have condemned the suspensions as an attack on campus democracy, while the administration has defended them as necessary for discipline and institutional order.

The suspensions, issued between April 20 and April 25, target several students from Left Parties, who have allegedly “defamed the college" on social media. Many of the notices mention charges ranging from “defaming the college through social media platforms" to the “use of derogatory language".

The move comes in the wake of alleged violence and misconduct during the annual fest held on April 8 and 9.

According to an important notice dated April 25, the Student union office-bearers have been suspended with immediate effect, pending disciplinary proceedings. The students have been barred from entering the college premises during the suspension period, except to appear for examinations and internal assessments. The duration of the suspension has not been specified; the order has been described as “interim" and will remain in force until further directions.

The first suspension notice, issued on April 20 against a single student, stated that the student was found involved in acts of indiscipline, including defamation of the institution and the use of derogatory language against teaching and non-teaching staff.

A second notice named 14 students for their alleged involvement in “acts of indiscipline, physical violence, and disruption of campus order" during the annual fest. Another notice issued on April 23 suspended 7 more students. In total, 30 students, including 4 student union office-bearers, have been suspended.

Those suspended have been barred from entering the college campus, except to sit for examinations. Many of them are part of the student union and received notices between April 20 and April 25. The students plan to protest against the Principal, arguing that the administration has not informed them which specific Instagram post or story led to their suspension.

Criticising the action, DUSU President Aryaman Sai said, “These are the very representatives who sit on protests for days, fighting for student rights, so what exactly is their crime? Speaking the truth? Exposing administrative failures?" Calling it an attempt to “crush student leadership", he added, “Silencing elected voices is not governance, it is fear," and demanded the “immediate and unconditional revocation" of the suspensions.

College principal Prof. (Dr.) Rama did not respond to the queries for a comment at the time of filing this report.

He further said that campuses are meant for dissent, dialogue, and accountability, not authoritarian crackdowns, and asserted, “Students will not be bullied. Students will not be silenced."

The students are also set to hold a protest at 11 am today outside the Hansraj College.
