Visually challenged Nikhil Dattatraya Ghatge navigates the floors of Accenture's Koramangala office in Bengaluru confidently using his white cane, the Braille-embossed signboards guiding. At his desk, senior analyst Nikhil has a laptop integrated with JAWS and a tactile number pad that enables rapid key recognition, significantly improving his typing speed.
His colleague Madhu Shivappagowda, a speech and hearing-impaired senior analyst with over a decade's experience in the company, plays multiple roles including offering sign-language support to associates across India through video communication and guides new recruits in the use of devices such as bone-conduction headsets, hearing devices and glasses — tools that make them feel confident and included.
Assistive technology increases or improves the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. From height-adjustable desks, accessible meeting consoles, tactile identifiers, and low-reach storage to support employees with mobility or dexterity challenges, a host of software tools incorporated by companies such as SAP Labs India, Volvo Group India, Accenture, Microsoft and Amazon enhance the functional capabilities of professionals with a wide range of disabilities.
Stumbling blocks
However, corporate India still has a long way to go in terms of embedding accessibility in their products, workplaces and cultures. Studies point out that only one in 10 persons with disabilities have access to assistive technologies and products.
Cost of purchasing such devices, lack of awareness, insufficient training, procurement hurdles and integration difficulties are among the stumbling blocks to adoption of assistive technology at the workplace.
Akshita Sachdeva, co-founder, Trestle Labs/Kibo, an assistive technology company, says there are two main challenges when it comes to integrating more persons with disabilities in the workplace. “Many able-bodied employers are not aware of the potential of PwDs. And, most PwDs have little awareness about various assistive technologies that can help them participate more fully in the workplace and society,” says Akshita.
Who pays for assistive technology?
While some employers pay for assistive technology, many expect employees to procure it on their own. Trestle Labs collaborates with philanthropic organisations to offer subsidies or fund part of the cost of its devices.
Accenture's medical insurance policy covers assistive devices for its employees and their dependents. The MNC has 45 accessibility centres across 22 countries where their workforce can test accessible technology and solutions to ensure they have the tools that best support their individual needs. For instance, Dhvani, its in-house platform integrated with all collaboration platforms, enables voice to text and text to voice conversion, and supports communication for people who have speech, hearing and language disabilities.
Shilpi Kapoor, Founder and CEO, BarrierBreak, an accessibility solutions company, says the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act mandates 4% reservation in employment for persons with disabilities in government establishments, but real inclusion requires proactive integration of accessibility at every level, from recruitment to training to daily operations. Says Shilpi, “Job portals that are incompatible with screen readers and interviews lacking accommodations such as sign language interpreters would not help unlock the potential of a candidate. The entire ecosystem has to become accessible to enable people with disabilities to work to his/her full potential.”
