RJD in Bihar Election 2025: The RJD faces a crucial test in Bihar's second phase elections, aiming to regain power and redefine its image under Tejashwi Yadav. The party's success hinges on expanding its appeal beyond its traditional Muslim-Yadav base by focusing on youth issues and social justice to challenge the NDA's stronghold.
With the second phase of Bihar Assembly elections on November 11 and counting on November 14, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) faces a key test of its political strength against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
For the RJD, this election is both a fight to regain power and an attempt to redefine its image under Tejashwi Yadav's leadership. Since the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the 36-year-old leader has positioned himself as the voice of Bihar's youth, focusing on jobs, migration, and law and order.
The challenge for the RJD lies in balancing its legacy with the need to expand its reach, beyond the party's traditional Muslim-Yadav base. How effectively it converts its loyal support into wider appeal will decide whether the opposition can mount a credible challenge to the NDA's stronghold.
Here's a SWOT analysis of the RJD, leading the Opposition INDIA bloc in Bihar:
Strengths
The RJD retains a strong and reliably loyal Muslim-Yadav (MY) vote bank, together accounting for roughly 30 % of the electorate.With veteran leader Lalu Prasad Yadav stepping back, his son Tejashwi Yadav has taken centre stage. At 35, he projects youth and a shift‐in‐tone from old era politics, which helps RJD reach younger voters and first-time electors.
The party is benefiting from renewed organisational efforts: its appointment of Mangani Lal Mandal as party's new state president is being viewed as a step to reach under-represented communities (for example, a focus on Extremely Backward Classes/EBCs).
The RJD's historical identity as a party of social justice and backward class empowerment gives it credibility in parts of Bihar that feel left behind.
In phase 1 of the polls, the broader electoral environment already saw a high voter turnout (64.66 %). As per historical trends, it is shown to benefit the opposition by signalling a demand for change.
Weaknesses
Despite the leadership change, the party remains dominated by the Yadav-family nexus, which carries baggage of internal disputes and legal scrutiny (for example, the land-for-jobs case). These issues distract from campaigning and can dent public perception.The RJD's organisational depth beyond its core strongholds is uneven; limited presence in certain regions and among non-Yadav OBCs/EBCs may hamper expansion.
Managing alliance partners and internal ambitions poses a challenge: younger self-assertive leaders or family rivals (such as Tej Pratap Yadav) may reduce focus.
The RJD now faces a stronger anti-incumbency challenge: having been out of full power for a period, it must articulate credible governance plans beyond identity politics.

Opportunities
Tejashwi Yadav's youth and fresh appeal provide a chance for the RJD to re-brand itself: his emphasis on jobs, migration, law-and-order and governance issues offers a broader agenda.Even though the NDA takes credit for the state's caste survey and resultant reservation hikes (implemented when RJD was in alliance with JD(U)), this can be electorally leveraged by the party's “Mandal” legacy to mobilise backward and deprived communities.
Growing disillusionment among youth, first-time voters and migrants may open up traction for RJD's promise of change.
Strategic alliances with parties like the Congress, left-wing partners and outreach to minorities can help RJD expand beyond its MY core.
Threats
The combination of alliance complexity and internal party dynamics is a risk: if the RJD cannot keep discipline and cohesion among allies and leaders, it may fragment its vote base.The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA remains organisationally strong, with welfare reach and branding of “development”. RJD must counter this message effectively.
Legal and reputational challenges continue to weigh: party leaders under investigation or in the spotlight can undermine credibility.
High voter turnout, while an opportunity, also brings unpredictability: if new voters swing differently than expected, RJD may lose expected advantages.
The risk of the MY vote base not being enough on its own means failure to expand beyond core communities may limit gains.
