Many only dream of pursuing their passions, but a man took a courageous decision and walked away from a lucrative corporate career to follow his heart. In 2019, Pradeep Kannan made the bold decision to resign from his high-paying job as the Operations Head at Oracle, one of the world's leading tech companies and return to his hometown of Karur in Tamil Nadu. There, he launched a modest food venture called ‘The Falooda Shop', driven by his passion for serving the classic Indian dessert beverage.
At the time, many called him reckless, but Pradeep stayed determined. Seven years later, what was once dismissed as a “crazy" idea has evolved into a thriving business and an inspiring entrepreneurial story.
Breaking Down the Rs 22 Lakh Investment
Recently, Kannan took to social media to share a transparent breakdown of what it cost to open his first Falooda Shop outlet in Bengaluru. According to Kannan, opening the first Falooda Shop outlet required a total investment of Rs 22 lakh.
He spent Rs 2.4 lakh on the rental deposit and Rs 60,000 on securing necessary licenses and registrations. To set up operations, he invested Rs 2 lakh in basic and used equipment. The largest chunk, Rs 10 lakh, went into furniture and interiors.
Additionally, Rs 3.2 lakh was allocated for initial raw materials and packaging, while Rs 80,000 covered salaries for four staff members for the first month. Branding and launch activities cost another Rs 1 lakh. Though he had planned to keep Rs 3 lakh as a working capital buffer, he maintained Rs 2 lakh instead.
Sharing the details on social media, Kannan emphasised a key lesson he learned along the way, “You don't need fancy interiors. You need repeat customers."

Social Media Reacts: ‘Interiors Bring First Visit, Consistency Brings Survival'
The post sparked an engaging discussion online, especially among entrepreneurs and F&B professionals.
“Solid breakdown. In F&B, interiors bring the first visit… but taste, consistency, and cash-flow bring survival. Most outlets don't shut because of low hype. They shut because working capital runs out before repeat customers build," a user wrote.

“Locations matter first, repeated customers are always good as word-of-mouth publicity, a local campaign is needed to attract new nearby customers, and social presence for tech search customers. Running a % discount, combo, family, and teenager discount can make it better," a user remarked.
An individual stated, “Fancy interiors are CapEx. Loyalty is revenue. Confusing the two is how businesses die beautifully."

By prioritising customer retention over aesthetics, Pradeep reminds entrepreneurs that growth in the food and beverage industry depends less on visual appeal and more on product quality, consistency, and repeat customers.
