Bangladesh yet to decide on PM Tarique Rahman’s India visit amid Hasina extradition row
Bangladesh has yet to decide whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit India next month, his office told PTI on Friday.
The statement came amid uncertainty surrounding Dhaka’s demand for extraditing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
“No decision has been made yet on his India visit,” the prime minister’s Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly told the news agency.
He said Bangladesh was awaiting New Delhi’s response to its request for the extradition of Hasina and “other fugitive criminals” currently staying in India.
Rahman’s possible visit could coincide with the BRICS summit which is to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
The BRICS grouping comprises India, Brazil, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Washington views the group as attempting to become an economic counterweight to the US.
Bangladesh has received two invitations from India. One is from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a bilateral visit, while the other is for Rahman, in his capacity as chairperson of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation to attend the BRICS summit.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said earlier this month that no decision had been taken on either invitation, The Daily Star reported.
The uncertainty was further amplified on Friday when an email from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to the media said a ceremonial Change of Guard at the presidential residence would not take place on Saturday because of a “full rehearsal for the ceremonial welcome of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh”, The Hindu reported.
The notification briefly fuelled speculation that Rahman’s visit was imminent.
However, the Rashtrapati Bhavan later withdrew the release, stating that the press release issued on August 21 on the Change of Guard ceremony “stands withdrawn”, according to The Hindu.
The developments came as Bangladesh and India continued discussions over a possible visit by Rahman.
On August 16, Dhaka has said that a “propitious” environment needs to be created before any top-level visit and has urged India to expedite Hasina’s extradition.
The neighbouring countries have had strained relations since massive student-led protests erupted in Bangladesh in July 2024 against a controversial quota scheme for government jobs and later snowballed into a broader agitation against Hasina’s government. Her government was eventually brought down, forcing her to flee to India.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal in November sentenced Hasina to death for crimes against humanity in connection with the deadly crackdown on protesters in 2024. In February, a court sentenced her to 10 years’ imprisonment in two corruption cases relating to alleged irregularities in the allocation of land in a government housing project in Dhaka.
Dhaka has repeatedly demanded that Hasina be extradited. It has also expressed concerns about the ousted leader being allowed by the Indian authorities to address her supporters from Delhi.
New Delhi has previously said that it was for Hasina to decide whether she wants to return to Bangladesh.
Rahman took office in February and has since visited Malaysia and China, departing from the tradition of Bangladeshi leaders heading to India for their first overseas trip.
