Amazon expands SVP Amit Agarwal’s role to include global selling partner services
Amazon has expanded the role of senior vice president Amit Agarwal, bringing global selling partner services under his remit alongside emerging markets, the company said in a statement. Agarwal, who was elevated to the SVP rank in 2017, is part of Amazon's 28-member S-team, the senior leadership group that works closely with CEO Andy Jassy.
The company's global selling partner services vertical supports and monetises Amazon's large third-party seller ecosystem.
The expansion of Agarwal's role follows the appointment of Dharmesh Mehta, vice president of worldwide selling partner services as a technical adviser (TA) to Jassy. “Amazon uses the TA role, for the CEO and other senior leaders across the company, to develop future leaders. Alex Dunlap, Jassy's current TA, will transition to a new leadership role within Amazon to be shared soon,” the company said.
Under his expanded role, Seattle-based Agarwal will report to Doug Herrington, CEO, worldwide Amazon Stores – but will continue leading the international businesses in 10 countries including India, Brazil, Mexico, Middle East, South Africa, and Australia. Agarwal has been with Amazon for the last 27 years.
“What the selling partner services team has accomplished is truly impressive—enabling our selling partners to deliver a delightful and trustworthy customer experience, and building a thriving global community of millions of sellers,” Agarwal said in a social media post.
The selling partner services vertical is responsible for building tools for third-party sellers on the platform across different stages of their journey with Amazon, including onboarding, payments, compliance, advertising and monetisation.
Agarwal had earlier been Amazon's India head and oversaw the company's local operations since its entry in 2013. He has seen Amazon fight local rivals like Flipkart in the cash-guzzling ecommerce market for more than a decade. In India, the operations are now led by Samir Kumar who is the country manager and reports to Agarwal.
The leadership changes come as Amazon carries out large-scale layoffs, having cut more than 30,000 jobs over the past four to five months in two rounds. In India, too, the company has laid off more than 1,000-1,500 people already, ET has reported.
Amazon had said the mass layoffs are part of Project Dawn, which aims to reduce bureaucracy, strengthen operations, and integrate AI efficiency across the organisation.
