An Amazon delivery driver was forced to abandon their van after following GPS directions onto the historic Broomway tidal path in Essex, only to be caught by the rising tide on Sunday, February 15. The incident unfolded near Great Wakering, prompting a response from HM Coastguard Southend.
According to HM Coastguard Southend, the driver followed satellite navigation directions via Wakering Stairs onto the Broomway – a 600-year-old, six-mile tidal track stretching into the Thames Estuary toward Foulness Island.
Often described locally as the “deadliest footpath in Britain," the Broomway is a historic route that becomes treacherous during high tide. The path, once marked by brooms placed in the sand, was historically the only access route to Foulness Island until a bridge was built in 1922.
Foulness Island today houses a restricted Ministry of Defence weapons-testing site operated by QinetiQ and access is tightly controlled.
In a statement, HM Coastguard Southend said the driver had safely exited the vehicle and reported the situation to Amazon. The company later arranged for a local farmer to help recover the van. Coastguard officers ensured the driver's safety before the vehicle was eventually removed.
Authorities clarified that the correct access route to Foulness Island is via the left barrier near the QinetiQ security office, not across the exposed tidal flats.
A Route With a Dangerous History
The Broomway has long carried a grim reputation. At least 100 people are believed to have drowned while attempting to cross the path over the centuries, though there have been no modern fatalities in recent years.
The shifting sands, fast-rising tides and lack of visible markers during certain conditions make it particularly hazardous for those unfamiliar with the terrain.

News of the incident quickly went viral online, sparking debate over overreliance on GPS technology.
Several users questioned why the driver did not turn back upon seeing water ahead. “Upon seeing the water, shouldn't common sense have kicked in at some point?" one commenter wrote. Another shared a personal anecdote about abandoning satellite navigation after being directed off-road near Heathrow.
The episode has renewed discussions about the limitations of GPS systems, especially in remote or hazardous locations where digital maps may not account for environmental risks such as tides.
Fortunately, the driver escaped unharmed – but the incident serves as a stark reminder that technology cannot always replace situational awareness.
