‘Acchi Bahu Sirf In-Laws Ka Dhyan Rakhe’: Delhi Man’s View Has Internet Saying— ‘This Is Why Women Now Are Single’
Family expectations can sometimes feel like an unsolvable puzzle, especially when it comes to the role of a daughter-in-law. A recent video has brought this debate back into the spotlight, which features an elderly man laying down rules about what a “good bahu" should do.
According to him, once a woman is married, her attention should shift entirely to her in-laws. It is a viewpoint that has shocked and infuriated many online.
‘Acchi Bahu Apne in-Laws Ka Dhyan Rakhti Hai,' Says Man Graduated From DU
The video begins with a simple question where a woman asks the man, “Aapke hisab se acchi bahu kaun hoti hai? (According to you, what makes a good daughter-in-law?)" His answer makes it clear: he believes her loyalty should be entirely with her husband's parents.
“Acchi bahu ka ye farz banta hai that she should take care of her parents, parents se mera matlab hai ki ladke ke parents se. Dekhiye unka ye ruzan hai jo maine aaj kal dekha hai, wo apne parents mein hai (A good daughter-in-law's duty is to take care of her parents, by that I mean her husband's parents. From what I see these days, her attention is on her own parents)," the man, who is a graduate from Delhi University (DU), said.
When questioned further, he added, “Apne husband ke parents ko apna parents nahi maanti hai. Jo parents hai na wo ladkiyo ka karta hai aur wo ladkiya unko tang karne lagti hai tab parents se bhi jhelna mushkil ho jata hai (She doesn't treat her husband's parents like her own. Once the girl starts bothering them, dealing with her own parents also becomes difficult.)"
He continues, “Usko baat karni hai toh wo apni sister se bat karti hai, baat karni hai toh apni mother se karegi. Wo naya ghar mein mix up nahi hoti. Ye mai aapko practical bata raha hu (If she wants to talk, she talks to her sister or mother. She doesn't blend into her new home. I am telling you this practically)."
The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “This boomer is a DU passout. No wonder in-laws are the prime reason for the divorces in India."

Viewers Not Ready To Let This One Slide
This old-school perspective didn't sit well with viewers who shared strong reactions in the comments section.
One user commented, “These ‘uncles' are all around us, even in our own families. Education level doesn't matter, whether they're DU graduates or not…women have dealt with such in-laws for generations!"
Another said, “Seriously, such toxic misogynistic in-laws and men ruin the lives of women… that's why women should stay single forever and f*** entire patriarchy."
“Uncle Ji implies that a married girl's love or attention for her own parents is wrong or selfish! Respect works both ways-men aren't told to abandon their families, so why should women?" someone else questioned.
“They expect their daughter-in-law to do everything, remain silent, and sever all ties with her parents, even basic communication. The moment she asserts herself, she's branded the villain, and her voice is dismissed," a person pointed out.
“The healthiest relationships I see around me are men and women taking care of each other's families with equal care and love. Everything else builds resentments," an individual stated.
“I think he is talking about the maid whom he called beti (daughter)," a viewer sarcastically said.
Meanwhile, one user pointed out that people like the elderly man expect a woman to completely “isolate" herself from her birth parents after marriage, while continuing to remain dependent on their own son. The commenter added that if such expectations require a woman's parents to live independently, then the same standard should apply to the parents of sons as well.
