'Effective Immediately': US Stops Immigration Requests For Afghans After Attack On National Guards
The United States has announced an immediate and indefinite halt to the processing of all immigration requests related to Afghan nationals, citing the need for a comprehensive review of existing security and vetting procedures. The move effectively freezes visa applications, asylum claims, and other immigration pathways for Afghans until the review is completed.
The move comes after two National Guard personnel were shot at by an Afghan national on Thursday near White House on Thursday.

In a statement, authorities said the protection of the country's homeland and the safety of the American people remain the government's “singular focus and mission."

President Donald Trump on Wednesday identified an Afghan man who fled the Taliban as the suspect in the shooting of two National Guard soldiers near the White House, calling the attack “an act of terror."
In a brief video statement, Trump tied the incident to three deeply contentious political themes — his deployment of military forces domestically, immigration policy, and the legacy of America's 20-year war in Afghanistan.
The shooting, which left two Guard members critically wounded in broad daylight just two blocks from the White House, was described by Trump as “an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror," adding, “It was a crime against our entire nation." He confirmed that the individual taken into custody “was a foreigner who entered our country from Afghanistan."

Trump said the suspect arrived in the United States in 2021 “on those infamous flights," referring to the evacuation of Afghans who fled the country as the Taliban regained control following the U.S. military withdrawal. The high-profile attack, carried out near a busy metro station during peak weekday activity, has renewed scrutiny of Trump's controversial use of military deployments in several Democrat-run cities, including Washington, Los Angeles and Memphis — an approach that has sparked lawsuits and accusations of overreach from local leaders.
Trump's remarks also indicated that his hardline immigration agenda will intensify. “We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan" under former president Joe Biden, he said. Trump added, “We must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here, or add benefit to our country. If they can't love our country, we don't want them."
