ED issues fresh summons to Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani in money laundering case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued fresh summons to industrialist Anil Ambani and his wife, Tina Ambani, in a money laundering case linked to an alleged SBI bank fraud, sources said on Tuesday. The anti-money laundering probe agency said Tina Ambani has been summoned for February 17, while her husband Anil Ambani has been summoned for the following day, i.e., February 18.
The ED had earlier summoned Tina Ambani for questioning on Monday, but she did not join the probe.
Since last August, the ED has filed three separate money laundering cases against Anil Ambani Group companies and has provisionally attached assets worth ₹12,000 crore.
Last week, the ED said in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court that it had searched 46 premises, issued 13 Provisional Attachment Orders, and attached 204 properties valued at ₹12,012.45 crore.
The federal probe agency said in a statement that it is actively pursuing perpetrators of financial crimes and is committed to restituting the proceeds of crime to their rightful claimants.
Sources said the ED has also set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) consisting of six officials, headed by an additional director-rank officer, to oversee the three money laundering cases registered against Anil Ambani Group companies.
Officials said that on January 29, the probe agency arrested former Reliance Communications (RCOM) director Punit Garg in connection with the money laundering probe related to a ₹40,000-crore bank fraud case.
“Punit Garg served as President of RCOM, handling its Global Enterprise Business from 2006 to 2013. Thereafter, he served as President (Regulatory Affairs) from 2014 to 2017. Subsequently, in October 2017, he was appointed Executive Director of RCOM. From April 2019 till April 2025, he served as a non-executive director of RCOM,” the ED said in a statement.
Last week, a division bench headed by the Chief Justice of India observed, “We may hasten to add that both agencies, namely the ED and the CBI, have already taken their own time before swinging into action. Therefore, we now expect that both agencies will act promptly, independently, fairly, and in a dispassionate manner. Let a status report by both agencies be filed within four weeks.”
During the hearing, senior advocate and former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi assured the Supreme Court that his client, Anil Ambani, would not flee the country. The Supreme Court also examined a CBI report submitted in a sealed cover.
In December, the Reliance Anil Ambani Group denied all charges in a statement. After the ED carried out provisional attachments worth ₹10,000 crore, Reliance Infrastructure said: “Mr Anil D. Ambani has not served on the Board of Directors of Reliance Infrastructure Limited for more than three and a half years. Reliance Infrastructure Limited is one of the largest infrastructure companies, developing projects through various Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) in several high-growth sectors such as power, roads, metro rail, and defence.”
