Eat These Foods The Day Before For An Easier Karva Chauth Fast
As Karva Chauth approaches on October 10, health experts are urging women to prepare their bodies a day in advance to ensure a smooth and safe fasting experience. The festival, which celebrates marital relationships, sees married women observing a nirjala vrat (a complete fast without food or water) from sunrise to sunset for the well-being and longevity of their husbands.
Given the physically demanding nature of the fast, nutritionists emphasise that dietary preparation before the festival plays a crucial role in sustaining energy and preventing dehydration. Senior dietitian Poonam Duneja from Delhi's PSRI Hospital told News18 that consuming the right foods before Karva Chauth helps manage hunger and thirst effectively throughout the day.
“A day before the fast, women should avoid fried, oily, spicy, and junk foods as they can increase thirst and put pressure on the digestive system," she explained. Instead, Duneja recommends simple, home-cooked meals such as dal, sabzi, roti, khichdi, kheer, curd, buttermilk, and coconut water. She added that proper hydration is key, and women should increase their water intake and include fruits that help retain moisture and improve hydration.
According to experts, the Sargi (a pre-dawn meal traditionally prepared by mothers-in-law) should ideally be consumed between 4 am and 6 am. Women can include fruits, curd, buttermilk, dates, and coconut water during this meal to ensure sustained energy levels.
Foods rich in water content, such as watermelon and cucumber, are especially beneficial, while bananas are best avoided as they can lead to bloating.
Health professionals further advise women to continue drinking water until the fasting period begins, as adequate hydration maintains electrolyte balance and prevents fatigue.
However, experts caution that fasting without water may not be suitable for everyone. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as those with diabetes or chronic health conditions, are advised to refrain from fasting or to do so only under medical supervision.
