Duplantis isn’t just the GOAT of pole vault. He is pole vault
Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis continues to dominate pole vaulting. He secured numerous world records and championships. His competitors acknowledge his exceptional talent. Duplantis aims to push the boundaries of the sport. He views pole vaulting as a captivating spectacle. His performances have elevated the sport's global appeal. Duplantis's future achievements remain a topic of great anticipation. He is the event.
In the moments immediately after his latest world record leap at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, as liquid emotion overtook the arena, three men clasped Armand ‘Mondo' Duplantis in an ecstatic embrace. They had just finished second, third and fourth behind him, yet celebrated much as if wide-eyed fans who unexpectedly found themselves in the same space as their hero in his moment of glory.
One of them, Australian Kurtis Marschall, who won bronze, was later asked about the man who had taken the win. “Mondo is from another planet,” he said without a hint of exaggeration. “He is doing incredible things, things many people thought were impossible.” In the rarefied air of elite sport, every so often, we witness extraordinary dominance. Think Jordan. Graf. Messi. Tendulkar. Schumacher. Bolt. Yet, in the thrall of intense competition, even the very elite, expect to sometimes be beaten. Mortality is a byproduct of sporting activity – in an arena, against others executing the same skills, even the very best practitioners of that craft can finish second best.
For the last five years, a lithe Swede, who will turn 26 in a little over a month, has found a way past this vulnerability. Duplantis first broke the world record in February 2020, vaulting to 6.17 metres. Since then, he has broken the world record (wait for drumroll) a further 13 times. Let us slice and dice that another way — the top 14 vaults in history — fourteen! — are owned by the same man. Before you pick your jaw up from the floor, munch on a bit more. In this period, Duplantis has collected two Olympic, three outdoor and three indoor World Championship Gold medals.
In 2024, he was World Athletics' Male Field Athlete of the Year and earlier this year, was named Laureus World Sportsman of th e Year. Mondo, as the world has come to address him, isn't merely dominating pole vaulting. He is that rarest of rare breed, that is their sport. Mondo Duplantis is pole vaulting.
The three men, who clasped him excitedly after the bar rattled gently but stayed in place as Duplantis descended from 6.30 metres in Tokyo, concede they compete for silver.
In Tokyo, just as he had at the Olympics in Paris a year ago, Duplantis had already secured gold. Only once the podium formalities were out of the way did the real competition begin — Mondo versus himself.
In Paris, as a raucous crowd egged him on, Duplantis soared to 6.25 metres to serve up an all-time classic Olympics moment. In Tokyo, he tingled the spines of a worldwide audience of millions, with yet another leap that beggared belief. These gravity-defying spectacles have catapulted pole vaulting to the epicenter of world sport.
“It really is just a beautiful circus act that we do,” he chuckled. “And I think that we can entertain anybody anywhere in the world.” Even as doom-scrollers stop their social media feeds and gawk at slow motion replays of the pageantry of Duplantis, the “what next” conversation is already on. He has plenty of time to break Sergey Bubka's milestone of 17 world records, and will inevitably extend his winning streak of 36 finals, but the biggest question of all is — how high is too high? “I know I can jump higher, and I want to jump a lot higher,” he said, but then explained what really drives him. “I'm going to keep pushing, because I think it's such a beautiful event. I think it's the most beautiful and entertaining event in track & field.”
Nice words Mondo but let us sprinkle them with a dash of honesty, shall we? Pole vault is not the event. YOU, young man, are the event. YOU are your sport!
