Duffer Brothers Open Up On Will's Coming Out Scene Criticism In Stranger Things 5: 'Proud Of It'
Stranger Things creators Duffer Brothers have opened up about the criticism regarding season five's episode seven, in which Will opened up about his sexuality. In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers revealed that they did not expect the criticism around the episode and that despite everything, they are ‘proud of it'.
“No is the honest truth. Because it is, as Ross said, something we've been building for a really long time. I always say, Ross and I are many things, but subtle is not one of those things!" Matt Duffer told Variety.
“We're proud of the episode, and we're proud of the scene, and proud of Noah, who gave a really brave, very vulnerable performance. I've been texting with him a lot, but texting with him specifically after that scene and after that episode aired. And he's in a really good place. He's very proud of the scene, and we're proud of the scene," Ross Duffer added.
For the unversed, Season 5 had an audience score rating of 73 per cent before Volume 2. However, it was dropped to 56 per cent after the release. Additionally, the show's penultimate episode, ‘The Bridge' – in which Will opened up about his sexuality – is the worst-rated episode of the entire series. It has a rating of 5.4 at IMDb. The rest of Season 5 have a score of 8.0 or higher.
Noah Schnapp On Will's Coming Out Scene
Recently, Noah Schnapp also opened up about Will Byers' coming-out moment in Stranger Things Season 5. In a social media post, the actor spoke about filming the intense scene, recalling how he spent nearly 12 hours shooting the monologue in one day. He explained, “It was endless. It was like a 12-hour day of just that monologue. And we weren't even done after the 12-hour day. We came back a week later to reshoot certain parts of the scene for another 12 hours."
While it was exhausting, Noah shared that it allowed him to try out different things. “I never felt stuck to anything. I got advice from Maya on how to prepare for it, because there were so many lines, more lines than I'd ever had before," he shared.
