Donald Trump Invites Israel PM Netanyahu To US, Warns Him Not To ‘Interfere’ In Syria
US President Donald Trump on Monday urged Israel to avoid steps that could destabilise Syria or disrupt the new leadership in Damascus. The message came days after an Israeli operation killed 13 people, triggering fresh tensions in the region.
Trump delivered the warning shortly before speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to Netanyahu's office, the US President invited him for another visit to the White House during the call.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote that it was important for Israel to maintain a “strong and true dialogue" with Syria and to ensure “nothing takes place that will interfere with Syria's evolution into a prosperous State."
Washington has been pushing for a security pact between Israel and Syria since President Ahmed al Sharaa's Islamist coalition ousted Bashar al Assad a year ago. The US administration views Sharaa as a partner who can stabilise Syria after years of conflict.
Tensions, however, have been building over repeated Israeli strikes inside Syria. In the deadliest incident so far, 13 people were killed on Friday in an Israeli operation in the southern village of Beit Jin. Damascus called the strike a “war crime," while Israel said it had targeted an Islamist group.
Trump said he was “very satisfied" with Syria's trajectory under Sharaa, who made a rare and symbolic visit to the White House only weeks earlier. He added that Sharaa was working to ensure Syria and Israel could “have a long and prosperous relationship together."
The US President said Washington was doing everything it could to make sure the Syrian government stayed on course with reconstruction efforts in the war-damaged country.
Trump believes closer ties between Syria and Israel would support his broader push for Middle East stability following the fragile ceasefire in Gaza reached in October.
The Trump administration has lifted sanctions on Damascus as part of its effort to bolster Sharaa, and US officials say Syria is now cooperating with the global coalition against the Islamic State group.
During Monday's call, Netanyahu and Trump discussed the possibility of expanding regional peace arrangements, the Israeli leader's office said. It confirmed that Trump had invited Netanyahu to meet him at the White House “in the near future."
Netanyahu has already made more trips to see Trump than any other foreign head of government since the US President returned to power.
According to Netanyahu's office, the two leaders also stressed the need to disarm Hamas and demilitarise the Gaza Strip while holding talks on expanding the peace agreements Washington hopes will reshape the region.
Israeli officials say the Beit Jin operation targeted fighters from Jamaa Islamiya, an Islamist group based in Lebanon with ties to Hamas. Israel maintains that it retains the right to strike militant groups in neighbouring countries despite the Gaza agreement with Hamas and last year's ceasefire with Hezbollah.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu drew criticism in Damascus and elsewhere in the region after visiting Israeli troops stationed in the Golan Heights buffer zone, which has separated Israeli and Syrian forces since 1974.
