In Karnataka, Congress' intra-party power tussle has intensified amid speculation about chief minister change in the state, after the government reached the halfway mark of its five-year term on November 20. There was an alleged "power-sharing" agreement involving CM Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar in 2023.
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said he does not want to “talk in public” about a “secret” five to six people were privy to, suggesting that there had been an understanding reached at the Congress leadership level ahead of Siddaramaiah's swearing-in as chief minister in May 2023.
“I believe all of us will work according to our conscience,” the 63-year-old Congress leader told the media in Kanakapura, the constituency he represents in the assembly, indirectly exerting pressure on the Delhi leadership
The Dy CM said he would not wish to disclose those details now and embarrass or weaken the party.
This is the first time Shivakumar has spoken about a speculated deal between him and the Congress leadership in May 2023 before he gave up his claim for the CM's post, though he did not reveal details. The political grapevine goes that he reportedly relented and agreed to be the Dy CM only after the party leadership promised him that he would succeed the incumbent for the second half of the Congress regime.
Shivakumar, however, told the media on Tuesday that he did not ask for the CM's position, but confirmed there had been a “secret' understanding involving five-six people after the party won a huge mandate in the polls. He said he was not aware if AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge would discuss with Rahul Gandhi about change of leadership.
“CM is our senior leader and an asset to our party. He has completed 7.5 years as chief minister. He has said he will present the next budget also. Very happy. He has worked as Opposition leader also and built the party. All of us are working towards the 2028 (assembly) and 2029 (Lok Sabha) elections,” Shivakumar, an eight-time MLA, said.
On some of his loyalists visiting Delhi to lobby his case, Shivakumar said they must be aspirants for ministerial positions while insisting that he neither sent anyone on his behalf nor did he speak to any of them. At the same time, he would not question why they went.
NOT MEETING RAHUL
Siddaramaiah said he has no plans to meet Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi as sections of MLAs loyal to Shivakumar camp in Delhi to lobby for their leader's promotion to the CM's post.“They have the freedom to go wherever they want. Let them convey their opinion (to the Congress leadership). Ultimately it is the high command that is to put a full-stop to the confusion,” the CM told the media in Bengaluru.
On Monday, Siddaramaiah said he would continue as chief minister if the Congress high command desires so amid hectic behind the scenes jostling by deputy CM Shivakumar to replace him.
Political lobbying has gained pace soon after the Congress regime completed half its term, last week, with a group of MLAs loyal to Shivakumar pressing for his anointment as CM.
