Doctor Says Babies Should Be Given Iron Supplements For Physical And Mental Growth

Babies grow faster than anything else on this planet, and to ensure that their growth is rapid, they need to be fed nutrient-rich food. One of the most important things that keeps this whole process running is iron.

Iron acts as the power battery inside a baby's body. It helps make haemoglobin, which is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

Why Do Babies Need Extra Iron?

Babies are born with some amount of iron stored in their bodies, but it usually gets depleted within 4-6 months. After that, they need to have iron from external sources, including breast milk, formula or solid foods. “Every child should be given iron supplements from 6 months onwards," stated Dr Mohit Sethi on an Instagram video posted by bacchon_ki_sehat.

Dr Sethi also explained that if babies are not given supplements at the right age, they start to show symptoms related to anaemia by the time they are 9 months old. “This affects their physical and mental development," he added.

He further recommended iron supplements for a minimum of 2-3 months and warned parents not to feed their babies one hour before and after the supplement, as it can affect the absorption of the iron. The expert also advised cleaning babies' teeth after giving them supplements so that they do not stain the teeth.

Iron not only helps with energy but also plays a key role in brain development. It helps babies learn, concentrate, remember and stay curious.

What Happens When a Baby Does Not Get Enough Iron?

According to a 2016-18 national nutrition survey, more than 30% children under the age of 5 in India were iron-deficient. Even more concerning, over 49 per cent were already anaemic, highlighting how critical this issue is for a baby's health.

When a baby suffers from iron deficiency, their body becomes incapable of making healthy red blood cells. During this time, their brain and muscles don't get enough oxygen, and they appear tired, pale and less active. They may not eat, get sick quickly, and their overall growth is also affected.
